Elaine McCauley Obituary

Elaine "Lainy" McCauley Lainy died on June 13, 2015 after a long cancer illness. She was born in Philadelphia on December 4, 1928. After graduating from an all-girls high school, she left home with her guitar and headed to NYC to start her career as a singer-guitarist in many venues, e.g. coffee shops playing folk music. Later, she was a member of a 5-piece all girls band that played in Montreal, Quebec, and surrounding Canadian and New England cities. Her next stop was an association with Arthur Murray Dance Studios in New Jersey where she met and married Billy Marrero. In 1963, she, Billy, and their 14 month old daughter, Maria, moved to Tucson where she lived until her death. Later, she and husband, Pat McCauley, had duos and trios where they entertained in bars, lounges, hotels, and many other places. Lainy taught guitar at Pima College for 34 years and NEVER missed a day - even through 2 bouts of cancer. Pat died in 1985, but Lainy continued to teach at Pima College and privately at the famous Chicago Store in downtown Tucson. Lainy did NOT have an enemy in the world and will be greatly missed by everyone. Thank you, Lainy, for your time on earth - making it a better place. Lainy is survived by her daughter, Maria Crane, of Phoenix and Larry Coomes, her companion for the past 17 years. Lainy requested that no services be held. Donations in her name to Humane Society of Southern Arizona.

I never knew Elaine McCauley, but in 1963-64 I was very fortunate in finding and taking guitar lessons from Pat McCauley who at that time was teaching guitar at a music store out on Speedway, I think. He loaned me his Gibson classical guitar so I could learn a piece and play it in a recital. I came across this obituary while looking for anything about him. He was a great influence and I´ve never stopped playing.

I knew Lainy from early 1967 through 1970. I was stationed at Fort Huachuca Arizona just outside Tucson and being a jazz pianist I went down to a club called The Beachcomber to see what the jazz scene was the like. There was a quartet playing and I remember Bob Schmeling was on piano and there was this gorgeous singer Lainy Marr. I asked if I could sit in and they graciously allowed me too Playa few songs on the piano. Then Lainy walked up and said "How about if you play one for me?" She asked me if I knew "The lady is a tramp" and I said yes. She asked me to play it in E flat and I said OK. That was the beginning of a long friendship. She was so gracious and sweet and loving and generous with anything she had. This covid thing Made me stop and think about trying to contact her and see how she was doing. Unfortunately, she passed away almost 5 years ago. I miss her sincerely she was one of a kind. My condolences to her family.

Lainey, I always anxiously awaited your visits to my shop. I also enjoyed this past mothers day visit with you and my daughter. You made us laugh like always and treated us like your daughter and grand daughter. It was OUR mothers day. I will always remember you, your stories, your example and your energy. I loved that you went to open mic at sky bar at 84. I loved that you modeled and performed for my fashion shows. I loved how you saw the world. You are a role model in my life. I loved you my dear dear friend. I miss you..
