Elliott Lax Obituary

Elliott M. Lax 9/5/1959 – 2/5/2015 Elliott passed away at home, embraced by family and friends during his last journey into the unknown. Elliott loved traveling and getting to know new people, cultures, and landscapes as he created enduring friendships all over the world. His passion in life was to help and mentor others: from the students he taught or advised, to refugee families who he helped thrive, to his family and his many, many friends. He had a gift for building community whether on an archeological dig, in the classroom, or working for social justice. The world has lost a tireless advocate for peace. Elliott brought happiness to all who knew him and will be greatly missed. He will always live in the hearts and minds of his family Eneida Lima, Gabriel Lima Lax, Joanne Lax, and Elaine Lax. Donations can be sent to "Hopi Foundation: Owl and Panther", PO Box 65461, Tucson AZ 85728. A service is being planned. Check caringbridge.org/visit /elliottlax for details.

I learned to know Elliot through my sister Cindy, and though we didn't meet often I considered him a friend. A warm, fine person who will be missed, and I will always remember the fun hikes together.

I had the great privilege of knowing Elliott from the Owl & Panther Project. Such a gentle soul who exuded love and patience beyond all expectations. I also had the pleasure of seeing him a couple of times at City High, when my work (UA Presents) brought performances in for the students.

I always thought the term advocate was a perfect description of his work with the refugee families. He was a real humanitarian.

He will be missed but live on in our thoughts with cherished memories.

Elliott, you will be dearly missed by all of us. You brought such lighthearted vitality to all those around you, with constant encouragement and inspiration. You were one of the first friends I made in Tucson after I moved there in 1981, and you have continued to be a dear friend always. I will always remember the times we participated together on activities in the local peace and social justice community, the many wonderful gatherings we shared with friends and family, camping trips and hikes, trips to the cabin on Mt. Lemmon, the men's discussion group, gatherings here in Nogales with our families and so much more. You will always be remembered by your many friends and dear family. I simply cannot say goodbye, dear friend.
