Ernest Patterson Obituary

Ernest Sheridan Patterson, affectionately known as Ernie, passed away peacefully on July 11, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Born on March 9, 1933, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Ernest Sheridan Patterson Sr. and Evelyn (Hawn) Patterson, Ernie was the beloved middle child among three siblings. He was predeceased by his parents, his sister Evelyn Mott, and his brother Clyde Patterson.

Ernie's formative years were spent in Lakewood, Ohio, where he cultivated a love for skating and hockey, teaching at the Winterhurst skating rink. One of the proudest achievements of his youth was joining the Navy during the Korean War and being selected for an elite electronics group stateside.

Ernie's life was forever changed when he met Patricia (Carlson) Patterson. Their nearly 60-year marriage was a testament to their deep bond and mutual devotion. Together, they raised three sons: Erik (Marie) of Oro Valley, AZ; Matt (Margaret) of Glastonbury, CT; and Ernie Jr. (Kristin) of Durango, CO. In addition to his sons and their spouses, also mourning Ernie are his seven grandchild whom he cherished.

In 1968, Ernie's engineering career prompted a family move to Connecticut, where they resided for 35 years. Ernie's passion for gardening transformed their Quambaug Cove home into a serene oasis, reflecting his dedication and creativity.

Seeking respite from the harsh Connecticut winters and desiring to be closer to their grandsons, Ernie and Pat eventually relocated to Oro Valley, AZ. There, they embraced their new community and welcomed a bulldog named Butterball into their family.

After Pat's passing in 2015, Ernie moved into Splendido, a retirement community he fondly described as a "cruise ship every day." His final years were marked by the same warmth and companionship that had defined his entire life.

The Patterson family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Splendido and Oro Valley Hospital for their exceptional care and support. In addition to his family Ernie leaves behind his dear friend Karen Knutsen.

A private Christian service will be held at the family's convenience, honoring the life of a man whose legacy of family, and passion will forever be cherished. A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.
