I knew Grant in Flagstaff, an honest, warm, caring, loving man albeit a complicated one, his heart never to be captured by an ordinary woman. Just heard of his passing, how I always hoped that he would find his one special soul mate. So hard to discover it was alzheimers at such a young age. Rest in peace, sweet, handsome, special man, pray we meet again in heaven.

So sorry to hear of Grant's passing away. I was a part of that early crew of 67-69. It was an experience I have carried with me to this day. A lot was accomplished by a bunch of college kids. I remember many of the names here, although it has been many years. Many fond memories. RIP friend.

I was so sad to hear of Grant's passing. He was a good mentor, boss and friend. He gave me my first job as a graphic designer at the Campus Recreation Center at the U of A. he was always generous with his time and advice. When the university wanted to downsize, Grant fought for my position knowing I had a wife and kids at the time. I will always be thankful for knowing Grant.

I just learned of Grant's passing. I was a young, single mom of 2 way back in the 80's when he and I dated for a brief time. He was handsome and so full of life and remember him fondly. Gone much too soon. RIP, Grant.

I think fondly of the time I knew Grant at the University of Arizona. It seemed that some of us majored in Camp Wildcat, given the life-long education we derived from the time we spent in this worthwhile organization. Grant was a true leader, especially during his year as Chairman of Camp Wildcat and Summer Camp Director. He influenced the lives of many around him.

When I first started my career as a legal assistant, I worked with Grant's mother, Katherine L. Smith. She was SO proud of her children and their accomplishments and Grant's were certainly most commendable. So sorry to read of his passing.

One on the finest men i've ever known. He gave me my start as a career professional in collegiate campus recreation. Took me under his wing and exposed me to so much stuff in Tucson and on the UA Campus as a young professional. He served as a Groomsman in my wedding and treated me like a member of his family. Truly loved our battles (me being a knucklehead) and Grant being Grant. You will be missed my friend

Grant was a lifelong friend--a kind, wonderful caring person. We worked on Camp Wilcat together at U of A and were co-directors of one of the camp sessions.
I am so glad Pat Hannan and I were able to visit with him nearly two years ago, yet so saddened by the progression of His Alzheimer's!
God bless you dear friend. May you Rest In Peace!

I was a classmate with Grant at Salpointe HS 1961-65, and our circle of friends overlapped. He and I and my future wife Kathy Walsh were in UA's Camp Wildcat together in the late 1960s. He had a million-dollar smile and was liked by everyone. When he was at UA in the 1980s, one of our sons worked at the newly constructed Rec Center where Grant was. Grant and I became co-grandfathers for Creighton Dixon, son of mutual highschool and UA friend Joe Dixon. At Camp Wildcat's 50th reunion in 2015, everyone missed Grant, but now we know he is finally at peace. God speed, Grant! Mike Ostapuk

Shakespeare put it aptly: Good night sweet prince, and flights of angels sing thee to thy rest! As a fellow Salpointe classmate, as a fellow educator, and as a fellow Marine, I salute Grant, not because a Marine Corporal is obliged to salute a Marine Captain, but because Grant Smith made a positive difference in this world. Ironically, because of the way Grant lived his life, he will be sorely missed especially by his family. I offer my heartfelt condolences in your time of sorrow. Peace.

Grant was our neighbor in Flagstaff for many years. He had a great sense of humor and in exchange for a lemon meringue pie he would mow our lawn! Our girls adored Captain Grant! I also worked with him at NAU. Grant loved life to the fullest. Heaven has gained one special angel. Rest In Peace dear Grant
