Henry Kenski Obituary

Born April 7, 1943 in Quantico, VA, Henry Conrad Kenski passed away in his home in Tucson, AZ on September 25, 2023 after a long life well-lived. He was 80 years old. He was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, accomplished musician, compelling teacher, and insightful scholar and political analyst. The son of a Marine, Henry moved around as a child. He attended Salpointe Catholic High School, which he paid for himself by giving accordion lessons and playing sets around town. He was featured on La Hora Mexicana as the little Polish boy who arrived in America and played accordion. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Arizona and his doctorate in political science from Georgetown University. He met his wife Margaret in graduate school and married in 1968. They then moved to Tucson.

He was a professor at the University of Arizona from 1968 to 2017. He taught in the Departments of Political Science and Communication. He authored scholarly work, such as Saving the Hidden Treasure: The Evolution of Groundwater Policy and Attack Politics. In 1991, he received the National Communication Association's prestigious Golden Anniversary Monograph Award with three colleagues for their study on inoculation strategies for promoting resistance to political attack messages. He designed the University of Arizona's first political campaign and media courses. Active in politics, he worked for U.S. Representative Mo Udall and U.S. Senator Jon Kyl as well as a consultant for many political campaigns.

Henry is survived by his daughters, Kate Kenski, Carolyn Kenski, and Erin Paradise, his sons-in-law, Jeff Anicker and Rafael Vazquez, and his four grandchildren, Henry, Robin, Adaleyha, and Vincent Anicker. He is also survived by his sister, Gloria Kenski, sister-in-law, Carolyn Corgan, and brother-in-law, Joseph Corgan. A Memorial will take place on Friday, October 20, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at Our Mother of Sorrows, 1800 S. Kolb Rd. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Henry C. Kenski's life. As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be made to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute at www.dana-farber.org. Arrangements by ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Avalon Chapel.

It's always good to think about friends. Hank and Margaret and their daughter Kate are the family members I knew and enjoyed as friends.

This morning, I began my day early and watched CNN. Reflecting on my time at The University of Arizona, I recall my valuable conversation with Professor Henry Conrad Kenski. I remember being his communication/political science courses where he taught the fundamentals without his personal bias and challenged me to ask tough questions in order for me to answer them.

Professor Kenski has had a huge impact in my life. Thank you! Rest in Peace.

Hank Kenski was a friend and a mentor. He was a man of intellect and reasoned insights a gentleman and a person of great character. I had the opportunity to know and work with Hank for nearly 20 years. The memories of working with Hank and Margaret I will hold dear. God bless you, Hank, you´re once again with Margaret. Rest in internal peace, good friend.

Dr. Kenski was my advisor and mentor in the political communication doctoral program at UA in the late 90s. He was an intelligent, kind, and funny man. I am grateful to have learned from him.

I knew Hank in high school as an opponent on the debate team: I went to Catalina and he went to Salpointe. He was smart and always very well prepared. Perhaps the debate training helped, as we both became political scientists. He was a good guy, smart, and funny. He lived a good life.

I am sorry to hear this news. Some of the fondest memories of my time as an undergraduate at the University of Arizona were studying under Dr. Kenski's direction. Thank you to his family for sharing their husband and father with all of us who had the opportunity to learn from him. What a life well lived.

Hank was a valued friend over the years, starting at Salpointe. We both wrote for the school paper and year book. When he was a legislative assistant in Washington for Rep. Udall, I was a legislative assistant for Sen Dennis DeConcini. We often worked together to solve Tucson problems. I hired he and Margaret to do opinion surveys in the Casa Grande area for a project I was getting funding for. What a wonderful couple.

I worked with Kate Kenski for the past four years and I heard a lot about her father and what a wonderful and accomplished man he was. I wanted to offer my sincere condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.

I worked with Dr. Kenski for years, but sadly, not in the same place. I always learned something new from our phone calls, even if the call's origin was rooted in our office's failure to have the weekend FedEx properly stocked with the right reading material. Never know he was from Q-Town, the only place perpetually surrounded by The Corps! Our parish, St. Francis, was established after Dr. Kenski grew up here, but we'll have a mass for him in the coming days. Luckily to count Hank as a colleague and a friend.

I remember Hank as an extraordinarily professor and wonderful colleague. He was a bridge and unifier In departments where he served.
His insights into politics were fresh, original and very useful. He did all he could to leave his community a better place. I am happy to have known him.

Prof. Kenski was an outstanding teacher. His superior intellect and knowledge, personal warmth, and sense of humor made him an excellent communicator. I loved the three classes I had with him.

We were friends at Salpointe, actually in Salpointe's very first band together.
Later in life my daughter, Bridget and Kate were friends also at Salpointe. I am so sorry to learn of his passing as I was when Margaret died. We treasure our friendships and would like the family to know we are thinking of them. Please accept our condolences. Jay and Cathy McCall
