James Nugent Obituary

James W. Nugent 92, passed away peacefully Christmas Day. He is survived by his daughter, Kathy; six grand children and 12 great-grand children. The last of five sibs, he joins his wife of 65 years, Charlotte; and his son, James. Jim could, did, and loved doing everything. Always a pioneer, he worked in the 40's constructing his and neighbors' houses on the then FAR eastern side of Tucson at Harrison and Broadway, an area still known as Halcyon Acres. He retired from Southern Pacific after 40 years, a job he also loved. Memorial Mass will be offered 2:00 P.M. Friday, December 30, 2005 at St. Francis De Sales Catholic Church, 1375 S. Camino Seco. In lieu of flowers, please consider a Mass offering or donations to your favorite charity. Arrangements by BRING'S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway.

Dear Uncle Jim,

I know that you don’t believe in “spooks”. You have told me many times. But, I will never forget the day Kathy’s dog went missing. I was so distressed, fearing that she had made her way out of the fenced yard. Even though you were not feeling well, you grabbed your oxygen, and got on your go-cart. You drove all over that huge yard, as I ran like a crazy person, calling over and over again for the dog. Finally, desperate and in tears, I stopped and prayed for Charlotte and my dad to find her for me. To my amazement, when I went into Kathy’s house, there she was! I looked all over, trying to figure out how she could have possibly gotten in, for all the doors, gates, and doggy doors were closed. I told you what I believed had happened. Charlotte, Grandma, Dad, and Jimmy are looking after us!

I have never doubted your love for me. I felt it strongly as we held hands and gave our good byes last April. We promised that we would see each other again. I know that we will!

And I know that, even if you don’t believe in “spooks”, you will ALSO be looking after us. I also know that Heaven wouldn’t be Heaven without tofu. So, hope you are enjoying it.

I love you, for ever!

Here's to one of the best Uncles a girl could have. Summers would not have been as fun without our Tucson vacations every year, who else would have put up with a whinny L.A. girl trying to learn to ride a horse, let alone old Poncho. Man there must be one heck of a Nugent party in heaven right now..lets hope God sent some angels to Nogales for a quick booze run. All my love.....

Dear Grandpa Nugent,

You were the best, brilliant, a very great man. You were kind, loving, funny, big-hearted, and just the salt of the earth. I am so proud to have my son JWN II share your name. Thank you so much for drinking coffee with me at 5am when our family visited. I don't know how I'll ever drink coffee again without thinking of you. I'm another one who got to do Golf and Breakfast with you and your railroad gang, what an experience. I loved your stories. I loved everything about being there in Tucson with you. The very earth around your house, and what you created on it, was vital and strong and essential. You kept it that way, made it even more so.

My grandfather Dougie Fitzgerald was a long-time trainman too, a skipper on the Jersey Shore line, and his wife was named Charlotte too. You two should be meeting up with each other now.

Uncle Jim,

I will never forget the great times spent with You, Charlotte, Kathy & young Jim at your home in Tucson. Those were probably some of the most fun times of my childhood

days and my favorite place to go in the summer! Our own kids had a great time when we came there for a visit when they were young too and Jim remenbers the fun times on the golf course with you too. These are memories we will always treasure.

When I heard Jim Nugent passed away I was shocked. I thought Jim would live forever, out there golfing with all his Railroad buddies. My Dad was Jim's best friend, when I would visit my folks, Dad and I would meet the railroad gang for Golf and Breakfast. Jim was always a great guy, solid as a rock and a lot of fun to be around. I know the railroad gang were gathered on the other side to greet Jim when he arrived.

Thank you for never telling my Mom and Dad that Jim and I accidentally free-rolled the old pick-up truck onto your scrap iron pile. That was a summer visit for two young boys to remember!!!

Jim,

Since I will not be able to join your family and friends for the funeral rembrance, I want to take this opportunity to thank you, and Kathy, for the memories of our dinners and games together. Your impish wit brought laughter to an always fun experience, even when we all lost to you!

I know your last train ride was the best as it bypassed the nursing home and reunited you with Charlotte and Jim. Now all three of you can look out for all of us.
