You are not forgotten, Sergeant Thode. I have been thinking recently of you with recent events, of the short period of time I spent with you in humbly preparing your platoon for deployment at Camp Williams the spring of 2010. What I found remarkable about you was how seriously you took your role as a servant of your soldiers. You cared deeply about them, and they knew it. After each exercise I ran, you would seek every bit of feedback -- what could each person, yourself, improve on. You were a counselor to the LTs in your company, guiding them in their roles as leaders. You, sergeant, represented the finest of the NCO tradition. If you made such as an impression on me in a short few days, I know in my heart that those that knew you for years will never let your memory fade. My continued condolences to your family.

Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and to also let the Thode Family know that we recently sent Care Packages to American troops in Afghanistan. Each box carried a dedication sheet that includes the name, service information and a photo of your loved one, Sergeant 1st Class James E. Thode. We recognize that this is a humble tribute, but we wanted you to know that it is heartfelt and made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals in the youth hockey community and beyond. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you strong.
Sincerely,
Charlie Gili & Family

We did not know Jim but we did know his mother Eve. Ron married us in 1999 and we used to occasionally see them in Pagosa Springs. (We have lost touch now.) We were grieved to hear of Jim's death and still remember. We are so grateful that Jesus' work for us will enable us to meet Jim one day.

To Jim's family,
Although I have never met you, I consider Jim as one of my very best friends - Jim and I met at Armor Officer Basic Course in 1991 at Fort Knox - We were inseperable - I was so honored when Jim came to my wedding and served as a Swordsman - I owe you pictures and will send them as soon as I return home. He made me a better person and I continue to struggle to think of the world without him. As I sit here in Kandahar, AFG I think of him almost daily - I regret never getting on a plane and coming out to New Mexico to see him - life and distance overcame our close friendship but I always knew he was there. Bless you for sharing Jim with us and my continued prayers are with you and your family.
Best,

I am sorry, my friend. I should have been there. Jim and I met in 9th grade and were inseperable for the next 10 years. To his wife, I am truely sorry for never having met you, I know you must be a wonderful person. To Eve, Mary, and Ernst, I am so sorry for your loss, you are all in my prayers. Eve and Ron,
It has been a year since your beloved Jim gave his life in behalf of all of us. While I know how much you miss him and will continue to miss him, we only hope you will derive some comfort from knowing you raised a child as noble and unselfish as Jim. He has set an incredible example for his children and all who knew him.

It has been a year since we heard of the great sacrifice made by you. We are so very blessed to have known you and think of you every day. Your sacrifice is never forgotten. We miss hearing your laughter next door at your Mother's house in Pagosa as you played with your family in the snow in the driveway when you visited. What fun it was to see your dogs pulling the sleds with Tommy laughing and having fun!!
We are blessed for having known you...

I went to High School with Jim. He was one of the few, very few, that I looked forward to seeing later in life and swapping stories with. Sadly that day will never come.
I will lift a glass in his honor, "To those who didn't come home." Rest in Peace Brother, you've earned it.

Carlotta,
Although I have never met you, Jim was a friend of mine and I just learned today that he was killed in Afghanistan in December.
I served with Jim in the 8th Battalion, 40th Armor in Tucson, AZ where we were Cav Scouts. Since 1989 when I left the unit, we've stayed in touch through email and phone calls. I want to offer my deepest condolences to you and your kids, and am so sorry I did not learn of this until today, as I would have dropped everything to attend the services had I known.
I just spoke to the Farmington PD Chief's office and got their address; I am sure that I have some pictures of Jim from that era that I'd like to send you. All the best.

A POLICE OFFICER'S PRAYER
Lord I ask for courage
Courage to face and
Conquer my own fears...
Courage to take me
Where others will not go...
I ask for strength
Strength of body to protect others
And strength of spirit to lead others...
I ask for dedication
Dedication to my job, to do it well
Dedication to my community
To keep it safe...
Give me Lord, concern
For others who trust me
And compassion for those who need me...
And please Lord
Through it all
Be at my side...

To the family, friends, fellow service men and women, and to all who knew and loved this man,
My heart is heavy every time I hear of the ultimate sacrifice of one of our country's finest. The price of freedom is so high and so costly. A thank you for your service seems so little in contrast. You gave all so that I and so many others have our freedom to do what we do everyday. My thoughts, prayers, and trust in our Lord and Savior are all I can give. May the Lord provide comfort and peace to all of you. Sincerely, A grateful American
