Jean HALL Obituary

HALL, Jean Gates Passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 30, 2016 in Santa Barbara, CA. She was 83 years old and a 70-year resident of Santa Barbara. The daughter of Colonel Eugene Gates and Genevieve Eleanor O'Neill, Jean was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on October 3, 1932. She went to 22 schools before attending her beloved Santa Barbara High School, and was a proud alumni of the SBHS Class of 1950. Jean recently celebrated her 65th high school reunion with "The Lunch Bunch" a group of her close high school friends, and many classmates. Jean attended the University of Oregon where she was a member of the Pi Beta Phi Sorority, and met the love of her life and husband-to-be her first week of college. She is preceded in death by her husband, Williams "Bill" Campbell Hall, a prominent architect in Santa Barbara until his death in 1987. Jean is survived by her daughters, Carol (Patrick) Swingle and Barbara (Hank) Peck and grandchildren, Kayla Swingle, Charlie Peck and Shelby (Brian) Davis, all of Tucson, AZ. Jean and Bill were founding members of the Santa Barbara Dance Club, and loyal members and Paul Harris Fellows of the Rotary Club Santa Barbara North. An active volunteer in the community, Jean was a member of the Junior League of Santa Barbara, and a volunteer at Alpha School and with Girls Inc. We are proud of our mother that through her perseverance, she was able to overcome obstacles and achieve her dream of being a successful business woman. We are grateful to those who were loyal to her and worked alongside her throughout the years. She will be remembered for her sense of humor and loyal friendships. Those who knew Jean well, experienced her kind and generous spirit. We are especially thankful to all her doctors, specialists, nurses and the many healthcare workers at Cottage Hospital, and the Cancer Center of Santa Barbara with Sansum Clinic, who gave her love and encouragement to battle her cancer. We are so very grateful to Jean's Palliative Care Team and the staff at the Serenity House who gave her peace and love in the last weeks of her life. A Celebration of Jean's life will take place at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the Alpha Resource Center (alphasb.org) and The Serenity House (vnhcsb.org).

Jean was always kind to me, and I am very grateful she gave me a place to live when I desperately needed one. I miss seeing her around, it's not the same without seeing her and her jeep cruising the park. RIP Jean and thank you.

I've known Jean for nine years, and the last time I saw her we were both leaving Vons and she was so excited that both of her daughters were coming to see her for Mother's Day the next day. I'm so glad she had the chance to spend that extra time with her family. You will be greatly missed Jean.

Barb and Carol,
I am sending you love, now and always.
I wish I'd had the opportunity to know your Mom... But in a sense I have; for I've been blessed with knowing both of you, and see each of you reflected in the beautiful smile and eyes of your beloved mother. My deepest condolences. And love, always love.

RIP Jean. I will always be grateful for the community you built that was a safe haven for my daughter and I some years ago. When I returned to SB last year once again your help and compassion landed me back in this special place. It will not be the same without you. I will miss you.

Jean ... You will be missed greatly. You were such a strong, independent and caring woman who took on the world. You could be so tough and so sweet and tender at the same time. Home will not be the same without you! I am happy to know you will no longer suffer and instead will be in a place with no pain alongside your beloved husband and puppy! Rest in peace sweet lady!
