Joe Mendez Obituary

Joe M. Mendez with great sadness, we announce the loss of our loving husband, father and grandfather at age 94 on July 25, 2014. Born in Tucson on March 19, 1920, Joe lived his early years in Mexico City. Returning to Tucson, he attended local schools, until joining the Army at the start of WWII. A part of the "Greatest Generation", he was in the 158th Infantry Battalion (the "Bushmasters") and fought in the South Pacific. Returning in 1945, he enrolled at the U of A, graduated from the College of Pharmacy in 1950 and practiced for over 40 years. He was an active member of many civic, professional and social organizations including St. Joseph's Church and The Centurians. In May 2012, he flew with "Honor Flight" to Washington DC. Joe loved playing golf and relaxing in the White Mtns, but his greatest joy was spending time with his loving family. Survived by his immediate family: wife, Aida (Wilkins) and children, Charmaine Hill, Patricia (Emilio) Puig, Robin Mendez and Phyllis (Cary) Cagle; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, numerous sisters, brothers, nieces and nephews and his best friends, Ruben Acosta and John Wagner. A Funeral Mass with Military Honors will be held on Saturday, August 2, 2014, 12:00 p.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 215 S. Craycroft Rd. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions in his name to Honor Flight So. AZ., P.O. Box 32649, Tucson, AZ 85751. Arrangements by ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Dodge Chapel. We so miss your warm and loving smile, Dad…

Dear Mrs. Mendez, Charmaine, Patty, Rob, and Phyllis,
I was so sorry to hear the sad news of the loss of your husband/dad. I have many fond memories of Mr. Mendez. Growing up our families spent so much time together. Trips to Mexico, the cabin in Pinetop, picnics atop Mt. Lemmon, the Tucson Open, etc. Joe was so sweet, and always wore his trademark smile. I know your hearts are broken, and I pray our Heavenly Father will draw close to you all, and bring comfort to your hearts. Our families lost two truly great men within days of each other. At times the sadness is overwhelming.
With much love, and deepest sympathy,

People come and go through your life. Some leave a memorable image in your heart, just as Joe did in mine. Joe was my boss for many years and I can say he was the best boss I have had in my life. He treated his customers and employees with kindness, generosity and the utmost respect. A great man has passed and gone to the heavens above, but will always be remembered by the people he came in contact through his journey in life. My deepest and heartfelt sympathy to Aida, Charmaine, Patty, Robbie, Phyllis and their families. May God and his angels always be with you all. (Margie) Margarita Cravillion

My condolences to the Mendez family. Your dad was such a kind and gentle soul. He was very appreciative for everything we did, even if that was just being there in the room with him. He had an impact on my life in just the two days that I knew him and I've continued to think of him and pray for him everyday since he's passed. Seeing all the family that would come to visit affirmed that he was a man loved by so many. God bless him for his service to our country and for being the biggest "wildcat" fan I knew! It was a privilege and honor caring for him and his family!

Words can not describe the heart break I have since your journey began. You protected us to the end & continued to reassure us that all was o.k in your own way, even trying to "trick" the hospital nurses too. I am so blessed to have been your daughter in this life and with Cary, to provide you your only grandson in Christopher. The opportunities, life experiences & lessons you taught us as our father and in parental form with Mom are invaluable. I'm already missing everything about you and what you represent - your voice, hugs, reassurance, your infamous smile & even that twinkle & smile in your eyes. Don't worry about Mom. We will take care of her, just as you did. I LOVE YOU MORE and in Christopher's words, "I Love You to Infinity and Beyond!!"

Dad~ You have been my hero, my inspiration, my role-model, and my rock. Letting you go was the hardest thing I've ever had to do.. you took a part of me with you. Thank you for the wonderful life you gave each of us, and for the beautiful marriage you lived with Mom. I miss your loving smile and sweet eyes every time I walk into the house.
