John Lowe Obituary

John G. Lowe, Jr. born June 5, 1922, John passed away while asleep on April 30, 2013 in Tucson, AZ. A career Marine who experienced three pacific campaigns in WWII, and three campaigns in Korea, held a wide variety of assignments in his 22+ year career including amphibious assault infantry, air wing, ground intercept, recruit training, towed and tracked artillery, force recon, ships security company, and several school and senior staff assignments. His most remembered assignments were as First Sergeant with Golf Battery, 11th Marines, First Sergeant for ships company USS Hancock, CV-19, First Sergeant for USMC Reserve Center Albuquerque NM, Squadron Sergeant Major Marine Corps Ground Intercept Squadron 1 at Kunsan Korea, and as Personnel Sergeant Major Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, serving with Lt. General (then Maj Gen) Warnham and Maj. Gen (then Colonel) Bruno Hockmuth. While part of troop movement on his way to the pacific theater in 1943, his train was held up overnight for minor repairs in Tucumcari, NM. When the town arranged a dance for the Marines on board with the local young women, John met the love of his life and his future wife of 38 years, Claire (Ernest). Married in 1947, John and Claire raised three children while travelling between duty stations until finally settling in Albuquerque, NM in 1961. John retired in 1965, and spent the next 30 years in sales, finally retiring as a regional manager for Tri-Chem, Inc. Due to his age and declining health he moved to Tucson in 2001 to live with his family. He is predeceased by his parents, John G. Lowe Sr. and Alice (Pesnell) of Meridian MS, and 13 half-brothers and sisters. He is survived by his half-brother, John Oliver Lowe and half-sister, Mae Auvil, both of Alabama and two of his children, Glynda and Dennis, both of Tucson, AZ along with many nephews and nieces. John took great joy in his wife and family, his Marine Corps, and his many friends over his long life. At his own request, John will be cremated and his ashes scattered in several locations he loved. A gathering of friends will be held at EVERGREEN MORTUARY on Saturday, May 4, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Arrangements by EVERGREEN MORTUARY & CEMETERY, N. Oracle & W. To the family of John, I offer my deepest sympathy for your loss. I had the honor of being John's podiatrist for the past several years. I always enjoyed his stories, positive outlook on life and his wisdom. I know he will be greatly missed by all of us who knew him well.
