John Poulos Obituary

John Poulos 88, beloved husband and father passed away on July 10, 2011 after a brief illness. He is survived by Hilda, his wife of 65 years; daughters, Diane (Art) Abbott and Denise (Gary) Torkelson; granddaughters, Stacy (Scott) Whitlow and Erin Torkelson; great-grandsons, Hunter and Parker Whitlow. He was born in NY, NY on July 24, 1922. He joined the Navy during WWII and was stationed in the South Pacific. At TRG Inc., he headed the tube laboratory that produced the LASER. After moving to Tucson in 1966 John helped develop the first Thin Films Lab Course at the U of A and ran the 22nd Street Research Annex, a large optical coatings facility that filled contracts for the U.S. Air Force Weapons Laboratory. Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, August 6, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Thomas More Newman Center, 1615 E. 2nd Street. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements by DESERT ROSE CREMATION AND BURIAL.

I only met John once when I took some lasers from the Physics Dept. at the U of to be recharged by him. At the time I think he was the only one doing it in the Tucson area. At that time it was a complicated task. Now they seem much simpler. I was thankful that John could fix them for us.
