Maureen,
I am still remembering John and missing his smiling face while waiting to bet his haircut. As I said before he was the nicest man I ever met and I will never forget him.

As I grow in my practice and appear before a number of judges, I often find myself thinking of Judge Roll. He was by far the most compassionate, patient, and fair judge I have known. I am understanding more and more what a privilege it was to clerk for him. I know I will feel his influence the rest of my career and will do my best to follow the excellent example he set both personally and professionally.

January 9, 2012

Although I was unable to attend any of the ceremonies and events that took place in Tucson during the past several days, John, Maureen, and the Roll family remain in my thoughts. Something happens virtually every day of my life that causes me to think about John. We miss him terrible, but we shall see him again one day.

Maureen...
I am so sorry to hear that your beloved John is no longer with us. John certainly followed in the steps of Jesus Christ. John was an inspiration to every life he touched. Even when we attended STS Peter & Pauls together his character could not be matched. And when you and I attended Immculate Heart I viewed you as a very special and ethical friend...an elegent angel with a great sence of humor. Remember us The Corpse 5 how silly was that ! Well...we all know one thing John is in the hightst place in heaven! Love & Prayers...Cynthia (Cindi) Bell-Heiser

Maureen and Family

The time has moved ahead slowly and yet I still hurt and I hurt for you all. The outpouring of community grief and love for John should affirm what you already so deeply know, that he was a good and decent man.

I recall like yesterday our coming of age years that began on the 4th grade playground at SSPP and continued on to the classrooms and cross country courses at Salpointe.

Every March while in grade school we'd ride our bicycles to baseball spring training at Hi Corbett to get autographs and try and sneak in (sorry John) to see our favorite players.

I shared these stories and more with my son Matthew, who affectionately knew John as "John the Judge," especially after he welcomed us to his chambers one day and let Matthew wear his robe for a few minutes. It made a lasting impression on that then ten year old.

So we will ache and smile and cry and remember always. And we are better persons for being able to call your dear John a friend. Joy and I share your deep loss and we offer you our love and support as time unfolds.

Save a spot for me, John. I promise not to try and sneak in.

I had the pleasure of meeting Judge Roll a few years back. My Public Administration class at the U of A had to go observe a court case and I got Judge Roll for my observance. I will always remember his patience during the case he was presiding over and how he came to me and other students after the hearing to explain the judicial process and answer any questions. I am greatful for that chance to meet him and I send my deepest condolences to his family. May he Rest In Peace.

Dear Roll Family:
When my husband and I saw the picture of your beloved John, before knowing of his heroic and Christ-like action, we immediately were taken by his face, so full of integrity and honor, his eyes sincere and loving. Although we can never know him or you, we admire and give thanks for the existence of people like him. We are so very sorry for your loss and wish you healing.

Although I live in Philadelphia, PA this senseless tragedy has touched all Americans. Finding out that John was trying to spare another person's life was something so honorable and dutiful that we cannot ever forget his life, the way he lived his life and the fact that he was at church earlier that day is also a testament to this man. Our sorrow is overwhelming for someone we never new - but the fact that he is a part of our history means he will never be forgotten by so many people. God Bless John and his family. He left a beautiful legacy for all of us to follow. Thank you Florence DeMarco

I had the privilege to appear before Judge Roll many times when I practiced law in Tucson, Arizona. As a Judge, he was always courteous, extraordinarily prepared, and fair. I have long thought that Judge Roll truly understood that judging one's fellow people requires that a jurist be pure of heart, open-minded, and entirely without bias. He conducted himself in that manner, always. May Judge John Roll be among the righteous in peace and with God.

My first jury duty ever was in Judge Roll's courtroom last September. His patience, his courtesy to all in the court, and his integrity were all very much apparent during the four day trial. The experience was very positive due to his efforts in explaining what was happening. Even though he had a very busy schedule, he invited the jury to his chambers after the trial to answer any questions we had. Judge Roll's family and the entire family of Tucson have lost an outstanding man. Please be comforted in the thought that he is in Heaven smiling down on you.

It is not often that a man's character fully transcends his station in life. I never met Judge Roll but I was deeply affected by his death. He had a kind face that seemed to exude confidence and integrity. I then proceeded to read articles about him on the internet and listened to remarks made about him from his family and friends. We only pass this way once and we must make it count. In my humble opinion Judge Roll did just that and more. I ask that God will grant the Roll family the strength to endure. I say to each of them rest assured that you will see the Judge again somewhere up there in the air, though we know not when because you have miles yet to travel before you sleep.

GRIEVING IS LOVE

There is profound meaning
in weeping and aching for loved ones that pass away.
The more you love and miss them,
the greater the depth of grieving.

Our bodies are but a vessel
passing through
glorious uncharted waters
of a vast ocean.

When the time comes,
with their sails benevolently fading into the sun's rays
and disappear over the horizon,
may God fondly and humbly grace them
with mourning family and friends
standing proudly on the distant white shores.

With outstretched arms,
gently bowed heads,
streaming salty cheeks, and
sorrowful hearts deeper than a fathomless ocean,
we are immensely grateful to have been part of their lives.
We have reaffirmed the significance of their existence.

Let the fleeting fish know how much you loved them
by crying a sea of tears.
It is the truest expression
of pure love and solemn reverence.

To those who stay behind,
anchored firmly to the beach,
and breathing the gushing breeze of death's journey,
may you be blessed with overflowing and bountiful grief!

Having worked at the AOC with Robert, Johns' son for 5 years, his tragic death shocks, angers and saddens me. Not only because of his many valuable jurist contributions over the last 40 years or because of the political extremist nature of this tragic event, but mainly due to the pain and loss experienced by Robert and his family. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family my friend. May your loving memories eventually bring you peace.

January 14, 2011

Both my husband and I served on juries in Judge Roll's courtroom during the past several years. We were both so impressed by his patience, his courtesy to the defendants, and his skill in maintaining the dignity of the court, yet remaining conversational and somewhat informal in tone. He strived to make the jury's time a learning experience, and we all appreciated that. His passing is not only a huge loss to the Roll family and their friends, but also to the community. I hope you are comforted by the fact that many people in Tucson admired him for his intellect and legal knowledge, and that we will miss him. We are all so sorry for your loss.

I had the privilege and honor to observe Judge Rolls courtroom. The first thing that struck me was his voice. I commented to the person that took me ‘he seems like a very nice person’ (just by hearing his voice) that person responded ‘you have no idea'. Unfortunately for many of us, we will never get to meet this great man; what I’ve learned about him through the news outlets has made a profound impact on me. I am amazed by Judge Roll and the life that he led, there is but a few like him. Your husband, father, grandfather, brother, boss has inspired me to be the best that I can be. I start today, if I can live my life like he did (even if it’s a miniscule change) then my accomplishment will be immense. I am saddened for all the victims and their families but the loss of Judge Roll has simply broken my heart.
