Joseph Weizenbaum Obituary

Rabbi Joseph Weizenbaum 80, died peacefully in Tucson on July 1, 2013. Always outspoken on issues of social justice and human rights, he was a rabbi and teacher for over 55 years, the last 41 of them in Tucson. He was the founder of Congregation Ner Tamid, which he led from 1993 to his retirement in 2002. Prior to that he served for 21 years as the Senior Rabbi of Temple Emanu-El in Tucson. He also served as an Air Force and VA chaplain. Born and raised in Pittsburgh, he was ordained and earned a doctorate from Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati. Rabbi Weizenbaum was an active leader in the Tucson community. While he championed many issues over the years, he was particularly proud of being the first Jewish religious leader to affiliate himself with the sanctuary movement in the 1980s that assisted Central American refugees to come to safety in the US. Drawing a parallel with his own father's European immigrant experience, he viewed such assistance as a moral and ethical obligation. He is survived by devoted wife Eileen; children, David, Jon (Nancy), and Suzy; stepdaughter, Melissa (Karl); grandchildren, Emma, Camille, Shane, Andrea, Jordan (Marissa), and Kiley; and former wife Sharon Kahn. A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, July 7, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at the Tucson Jewish Community Center, 3800 E. River Rd. Private interment in the Congregation Ner Tamid Section of Evergreen Cemetery. Arrangements by EVERGREEN MORTUARY. To offer condolences visit www.evergreenmortuary-cemetery.com. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice.

Still missing your kind words, the wisdom you shared with me and our Saturday morning group. When you taught us how events of history connected with events of today had Jewish meaning, I wonder what words you would have about the middle East currently.

Saturday mornings have not been the same since Rabbi Joe left us. His wisdom, and ability to relate each weekly's Torah portion to current times made me think... there's nothing new under the sun. How would Rabbi Joe help us understand today's America? STILL missing you.

Saturday mornings without Rabbi Joe and his teachings are just not the same. Although a few of us still get together for lunch once a month, you are clearly missed. It was fascinating how you brought the words of our book, although thousands of years old, to connect with the world of today. I wonder what you would make of our current political situation?

What a loss! Though we were not members of his congregation, we always looked forward to Shabbat services at Ner Tamid when we attended with our friends. Rabbi Joe called us his "Presbyterian Jews who glow in the dark", remembering our careers at a national laboratory. Such a learned man!

Rabbi Joe, Saturday mornings just won't be the same anymore. The hour spent with you and the rest of the study group was, for me, the most enjoyable, enlightening and philosophically brilliant hour of my week. And then there was the time when I first visited Ner Tamid and your sermon, although for the congregation, spoke directly to me. It was as though you created those wonderful, thoughtful words to help me through some rough moments. From that time forward YOU were my rabbi. May your memory be a blessing. Thank you for everything.

My thoughts and prayers are with Eileen and Rabbi Joe's family. He was instrumental in helping TIHAN get started, and his leadership in the early days of HIV was tremendous. His passion for social justice and his inclusion of all people were blessings to me and to so many others. Thank you Rabbi for your leadership and service.

Rabbi Joe had known me since I was born. He always had amazing words of wisdom to offer, devotion to the community, and when you were down he could light up the room with his humor. He had a way of always putting a positive outlook on things. When I had my own baby this year, I received the most wonderful card from Joe & Eileen, it brought a tear to my eye that after 29 years he still had so much love for us all. He will be dearly missed. Eileen, you and your family are in my thoughts.

Joe and I had a few things in common.
We exercised together, with the rest of the class many times at the JCC.
Many friendly discussions ensued. Most often I deferred to the Rabbi.
We both came from Pittsburgh.
I knew Joe, Joe was a friend of mine.

Familia Weizenbaum,
I received knowledge, warmth, and a wonderful sense of humor from Rabbi Joseph. I met him when I was in my 20's at temple and later he came to a couple of my classes at the U of A. I am not Jewish and I just enjoyed hearing him speak because I felt the conversation was between us. His absence is a profound loss. En paz descanse el alma de Rabbi Weizenbaum. Gracias for embracing Tucson and for leading us all Adios.

Rabbi Joe will always be remembered for his humor, honesty, and commitment to social justice. May his memory be a blessing and comfort to all he touched.
