Julia NEWMAN Obituary

NEWMAN, Julia A. born December 2, 1917 took her last train ride home on November 14, 2017, just short of her 100th birthday! Julia first came to Tucson, Arizona via a one way train ticket in 1941 and began working for the Southern Pacific Railroad shortly thereafter. She worked in various positions within the railroad and eventually retired as the Secretary to the Superintendent after a 35 year career. During her retirement she dedicated herself to serving the Tucson Community. Julia volunteered for many years with NICU Cuddlers at UMC hospital, with Mobile Meals, the Southern Arizona Transportation Museum, and Casa Maria Soup Kitchen. Julia also had a second home in Otway, Ohio, with her husband Donald Newman, where she was an active volunteer at Scioto Memorial Hospital in Portsmouth, Ohio. As avid gardeners, Julia canned huge amounts of vegetables they grew in Ohio and shared these prizes with both Otway and Tucson! Born in Aurora, Illinois to Hungarian immigrant parents, Joseph and Cecila Czecz, Julia was preceded in death by husbands, William F. Peters and Donald K. Newman; son, William F. Peters Jr. and grandson, Will F. Peters III. Julia is survived by her two daughters, Sheila Govern (Richard) and Julie Peters; four grandchildren, Cynthia Berry (Michael), Katherine Govern (fiancé John Makovic), Alex Govern (Caitie) and Becky Peters; great-grandchildren, Will, MJ and Maia Berry and Hudson Govern and numerous quadrupeds. Julia Newman was a lively, genuine, and thoughtful person to all who met her. Julia will be remembered by her keen business sense, crocheted angels and snowflakes, bright blue eyes and red hair, her love for her Arizona Diamondbacks, and her favorite slot machines at Desert Diamond Casino. Julia Newman was and will continue to be an inspiration to her family and all who called her a friend. She will be dearly missed. Her family will hold a celebration for her life, and encourage all who knew her to go out and volunteer in service to their respective community. The family would also like to thank the staff at Foothills Place and Casa de la Luz for their gentle care of this sweet woman. A Mass will be held at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 1946 E. Lee St., on Saturday, December 2, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider contacting the Southern Arizona Transportation Museum (SATM) (520) 623-2223 to make a donation in her honor. Arrangements by BRING'S BROADWAY CHAPEL.

She was such a caring person to all she met. She volunteered at Blenman School in our cafeteria and ALWAYS had a smile on her face when talking to the children.
