M. Heine Obituary

Dr. M. Wayne Heine died on July 24, 2012 at the age of 79 from pancreatic cancer. Born in Ellendale North Dakota he was the third child of the late Robert and Laura Heine. He grew up in Dade City Florida and attended the University of Florida. After three years of college he was accepted to Duke Medical School and graduated in 1958. During medical school he rotated at East Tennessee State University Medical Center and met Mildred Joyce Phillips, daughter of the late Gus and Annie Phillips, who was a student nurse at the time. They were married in April 1958 in Johnson City. He subsequently completed his internship at the Medical College of Virginia and his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Florida. From there he performed a research fellowship in Endocrinology at the Worcester Foundation in Massachusetts. Wayne spent two years of service in the Army at Fort Benning, Georgia during the Vietnam War. At his discharge he was honored with a commendation medal for introducing oral contraceptives to the patients he cared for in the base clinics. He subsequently embarked on a highly successful career in academic medicine. He was involved in over 200 publications and for his entire career was considered one of the premier educators in the field. He held academic positions at the Universities of Florida and Arizona. He became the founding Chair of the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas and opened three other campuses that served as referral sites for the entire West Texas region. After 12 years at Texas Tech he returned to Arizona as Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Arizona where he completed his career and retired as a Professor Emeritus. Dr. Heine was an examiner for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology for over 20 years, and belonged to many professional societies and clubs. Of his numerous accomplishments, the ones in which he took the most pride were the teaching awards he received at all three academic institutions in which he practiced, and the numerous medical students, residents and faculty he mentored during his 46 year career. Wayne will be remembered as an honorable man who was always kind and encouraging. He was devoted to his wife, Millie, relished the time he spent with his grandchildren who adored him, loved to travel, play golf or share a glass of wine with friends. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Millie Phillips Heine; his son, Kevin Heine and his daughter, Taylor Anne Heine; and his son, Phillip Heine MD and his wife, Holly Jean Coward MD and their sons, James and William Heine. He is also survived by his sister, Rosalee Heine Grund (Ray Grund) of West Bend, WI and his sisters-in-law, Bobbie Phillips Arrowood (JL Arrowood) of Oak Ridge, TN, Peggy Phillips Love (Ted Love) of Erwin, TN and Cathy Phillips Salyer (Bob Salyer) of Flemming Island, FL. He was predeceased by his sister, Louella Heine Stocker (Phil Stocker, deceased) of Green Valley, Arizona and his brother, Robert J. Heine (Lillian Heine) of Drayton, North Dakota. A Memorial Service will be held at La Paloma Country Club on Saturday, November 3, 2012 at 4:00 p.m. Donations in Wayne's memory may be made to the ObGyn Resident Education Fund, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Arizona.
