Marilyn Surina Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Marilyn Ann Surina on December 5, 2024, at the age of 79. Born on November 5, 1945 in Illinois, Marilyn grew up in Arizona. She graduated from Saints Peter and Paul Catholic School, Salpointe Catholic High School and the University of Arizona where she earned a bachelor's degree in Business.

After graduation she moved to San Francisco and enjoyed the culture and sophistication of big city life as well as her work in personnel management. Tucson and family finally lured Marilyn home again, continuing her career in business as a realtor with Longs Realty and later Tucson Water Company.

Marilyn was a fiercely independent woman living life on her own terms. She was a devoted daughter and primary care giver for her parents, Mildred and John Surina. She is survived by her sisters Janice Cise (Michael) of Indianapolis, IN and Sharon McCusker (Robert) of Tucson, AZ. Her brother John Surina preceded her in death.

Marilyn was always an avid reader and crossword enthusiast, but traveling the U.S. and Europe with her life-long friend, Bernice Poloniak of Boston, MA. was the highlight of her life. She had an infectious smile and will be deeply missed by family and friends alike. While her health precluded her from having her own pet, Marilyn had profound compassion for abandoned and abused animals. She was unwavering in her support for animal adoption and rescue services.

A Funeral Mass will be held on December 27, 2024 at 5:15 p.m. at St. Thomas More Catholic Newman Center, 1615 East 2nd Street, Tucson, AZ. Visitation one hour before Mass. Internment at Holy Hope Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to Tucson Rescue Now Animal Shelter, 6468 N Oracle Rd, Tucson, AZ 85704 (520) 490-7508, or Salpointe Catholic High School Scholarship Fund, 1545 E. Copper, Tucson, AZ. Arrangements by Brings Funeral Home.

Condolences to Marilyn's family. She was always such a helpful person when I worked with her. We shared many laughs together as she would always tell me that I was crazy! LOL!
May she rest in glory!

At her memorial mass Fr. Emmanuel said she was always smiling. Her motto was be strong and be loved.

Marilyn convinced me to go to my first reunion when I hadn´t planned on going. I stayed in touch briefly after that but life intervened as it does and I lost track . Condolences to her family. She will be missed.

I went to High School with Marilyn. My Family moved to Arizona in 1959, just before I started high school. Since I hadn't been here for elementary school like most of my classmates, I didn't know anyone. I met Marilyn soon after school started. We became friends and attended many school events together. I lived on the far east end of Tucson, so we didn't do much together outside of school. After graduation, we went our separate ways. I lived out of state most of my adult years, but we got together occasionally when I was in town. I know she was a very independent person. The last time I talked to her quite a few years ago, she was working on a home improvement project which involved tiling some floors. I believe she was doing it herself! I haven't heard from her in a few years, and have wondered about her. especially when she didn't attend our last HS Reunion. It takes the loss of someone to make us stop and think about old friends. My Thoughts and Prayers are with Marilyn's family.

As a close friend of Bernice I met
Marilyn years ago and we became friends. She visited Maine and Boston and I visited Tucsan several times.
She will be missed but I know that God has a special place for her. I will keep her in prayer and in my heart.
