Every May I remember the life and service of CSM Barreras. Like others that have signed the guest book, myself and virtually the entire Base Fire Department attended the memorial ceremony at Shindand and it was an incredible display of honor and respect for a soldier's soldier. Gunny, you will never be forgotten.

To all who have goven us your condolences for me family about my uncle, I thank you all. Your love and support has helped us get stronger and stronger each and every day. We went to visit today and om the day of his passing. My uncle loved oreos, and on his gravesite there lied a heart made of oreos. For that person, please reach out to me. My family thanks you! Today is memorial day, so we remember the fallen soldiers and the living soldiers who risked or lost their lives fighting for our freedom. Dont forget them. They are the reason we are free. I worked alongside CSM Barreras while at Shindand. While I cannot say I knew him well I do remember the interaction that we had the day before he passed on. He had brought a computer in to get fixed and all the while he was making all of us laugh. I remember going to his viewing while in Afghanistan. There were soldiers from multiple nations. You couldn't fit another person into that hanger. God bless you and your family.

I just found out about Marty and I am so sorry to hear about his passing. I am filled with memories of him being such a sweet guy in choir class at Sunnyside High School. My best friend Debbie and I were lucky enough to get to know his brother David, his mom Gloria and his Dad, who we called Uncle Peachy!! We had a such a fun time in our youth I will never forget. Thank you Marty for your sacrifice and my love to la familia Barrera. His light will shine in my heart forever.

Many of our members served with him while he was the Command Sergeant Major of the United States Army Marksmanship Unit at Fort Benning, Georgia, and remember him as a professional soldier. La Familia Barrera...my deepest condolences. My son called me last night from Afghanistan asking about "Gunny". I sent him as many pictures of his memorial service that I could find.
C/Co, 2-5 IN is feeling your loss.
You have no idea how much love I have for any man or woman wearing a US Military uniform.
They are my Son's brothers and sisters.
When I read or see stories on the news of a soldier that has made the ultimate sacrifice for God and Country…I cry.
I cry for that soldiers family, because I know the fear and pain they lived with while there son was deployed.
We lived with that constant fear, always praying for the safety of Dino and his platoon.
I cry because that families worst fear was realized by a simple knock on the door.
I cry because that dying soldier only thoughts in his last moments was to be with his family who were thousands of miles away….did he die alone?
Was he holding tight to a picture of the people he loved most in his life?
These men are not just soldiers to me, they are family. I cry as any family would.

My deepest sympathies go out to his family. When I first heard about Gunny getting injured I thought "well Gunny is tough, he'll be fine"; then when the news came that he had passed I was so shocked and saddened. Adam "Musky" was indeed shocked as well. I know he along with everyone else that knew him on both a professional and personal level thought so highly of him. While I hadn't seen Marty since the last Halloween party at his home while stationed at Benning, I have seen him thru Victorria's FB page in the wonderful and loving pictures of the two. He will forever be missed by all that knew him. I hope your family can take comfort in knowing that Gunny's legacy will live on through his family, friends and the soldiers he worked with and trained.

My deepest condolences to the Barreras family. Regretfully there are no words capable of removing or alleviating the pain and hurt you are all feeling right now. The only one capable is the one in who's name I pray your comfort and healing- our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Although your hearts are severely hurting, I pray that you take comfort in the fact that the Lord is close to those of a broken heart and contrite spirit, and He will carry your family through this tough time. With regards to his service, CSM Barreras was the epitome of what I viewed as a modern day warrior. We have only know Martin for 16 years, he was the most positive, caring, and professional soldier that our family has ever known. Starting from a professional business meeting, we quickly became as one family. Our last time together was with Martin and Victoria having Thanksgiving dinner at our home in MA.
Words cannot express how we feel. It is plain to see he was raised in a wonderful loving, responsible family. A truly dedicated, very brave, but also humble warrior for God and Country! God bless you always Marty and family!

Sgt. Barreras was my son's 1st Sgt in Ranger Battalion. He is very saddened and as he put it, "he was an AWESOME guy". My son was with him on the Lynch rescue and that story still has not really been told. Thank God we have men like Mr. Barreras, they are few and far between. Rangers Lead the Way.
