Ned Mackey Obituary

Harry E. (Ned) Mackey Jr., (1937-2024), leaves behind many dear friends and his beloved family: his wife of 66 years, Pat; his 3 children Janet (Duke), Ned (Colleen), and Maryann (Frank); 5 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren; and his sister, Ann.

Ned and Pat grew up together in Bend, OR. They married in 1957 and soon after moved to Tucson where they started a family. He dedicated his professional life to teaching English and coaching track and cross country, mostly at Rincon High School.

In retirement, he was an avid cyclist, singer, and writer-poet. His first book of ekphrastic poetry was titled "Art for Poetry's Sake." He collaborated with accomplished artist friends to create "Believing Is Seeing," "Talk About Art!" and "Cat Tails."

He was in a folk band in the 1960s called the Bean Alley Boys. In later years he was a member of the men's chorus Sons of Orpheus and performed at many venues including the San Xavier Mission and the White House.

He was a mentor, colleague and friend to many during his rich life. Pat is eternally grateful to the family members and dedicated friends who comforted him in the last years of his life.

I recall Ned Mackey because he was the coach for cross country. The sport was challenging, to be sure, but under his direction I was motivated to push myself and do my best, to keep on going until I made it to the finish line.

Ned Mackey was a beautiful human. I knew him as a track coach and my senior year English teacher at Rincon High, 1972. I didn't care much for school at the time and was generally doing poorly. At the same time, we read some great books in Mackey's class and a fire was lit. In my writing he saw something in me that I didn't see in myself, and he let me know in ways that only a nuanced thinker could. He set me on a path that changed my life. I carry Mackey's inspiration and share it in spades. Love is the word the man carried. Creativity the way he breathed. I light a candle and feel the presence of poetry.

Mr. Mackey - I mention you often over the years and I will always be grateful for allowing me to pass your 1970 English class - you were a great teacher but I was a not so good student. I swear to this day you allowed me to pass your class with a 4 (5 is failing) out of the goodness of your heart. If I received a failing grade, I wouldn't have graduated. For some reason, every time I see Donald Sutherland, I think of you especially when he smiles or laughs. I know this will make you laugh - "I are a graduate" - You are now with God and he will kept watch over you for eternity - may he keep watch over Pat and all your loved ones. You will forever be in my heart.

Mr. Mackey was a marvelous English teacher - actually a role model for me later on. He taught us to love literature, to be kind, positive, and accepting of each other, and to always see the humor in a situation. I had the good fortune of running into him many years later when he had retired, and true to form he then offered me examples of how to retire well and enjoy life every moment. I was so lucky - along with thousands of other students - to have known Mr. Mackey! Sincerest condolences to his family. Please remember how many young lives he changed for the better.

I had Coach Mackey at Rincon for XC and track in the 60's. I probably drove him crazy sometimes and he got after me for good reason. He was a very nice man and a dedicated coach. I found it ironic that he grew up in Bend, OR . . which is now my current residence.
