Peter HERDER Obituary

HERDER, Peter D. On August 5, 2018 we lost a home-building legend, business icon, friend, father, husband, mentor, and precious soul, Peter D. Herder. Peter was born in Denver, Colorado, earned his Masters at San Jose State, and graduated from Fuller Seminary. He served in the Army and as a reservist for seven years, and became the youngest Sergeant in Fort Hood, Texas history at age 18. Peter was an icon in the homebuilding industry, developing and building thousands of homes and commercial buildings in Tucson including St. Philip's Plaza, Ventana Canyon Golf Villas and Lake Estates, Riverbend at Sabino Canyon Estates, and Butterfield Business Center to name a few. Peter was heavily involved in politics and met no less than five presidents. This legend served as the President of the National Association of Homebuilders and was inducted into the National Housing Hall of Fame in Washington, DC. Peter served on President Reagan's Commission on Housing and stayed active in NAHB serving on their Board of Directors, the National Housing Endowment Board of Directors, and served as the BUILD-PAC Chairman for the State of Arizona. Locally Pete Herder's name is well known in the business, political, and building industry. Peter was president of the Southern Arizona Homebuilders Association three times, SAHBA's Builder of the Year, and SAHBA's Inspirational Leader of the Decade. Peter served on the Arizona Housing Commission and was a founding member of the Arizona Commerce Authority. Tucson City Council and the State of Kentucky named August 30, 2005 Peter D. Herder Day for his contributions to his industry and the community. Peter built the Tucson Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and served as President. He was a member of the United States Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and was Chairman of the United States Chamber of Commerce Construction Action Council. He served on the Board of Directors for Mountain Bell and had many charitable ministries he poured his heart and soul into. This beautiful soul is a precious shining treasure to all who knew him. Our loss and devastation is complete. He is beloved and cherished by so very many. The day that great man's light faded, so did the light in our lives. Peter was the sun to our sky, the moon to our stars, and the laugh to our smile. Part of our heart stopped beating when his did. You are so missed our precious Peter. Peter is survived by his companion and soulmate of 28 years his beloved wife, JoAnn and daughter, Jenna. Peter's other children are John, Trece and Mark. Funeral will be held Saturday, September 22, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at Saint Thomas the Apostle, 5150 N. Valley View Rd. Reception to follow.

My dear friend Pete, many years you encouraged me and showed me the grace of God. You went above and beyond what I would have ever deserved. You have been on my heart lately and I ran across the obituary that you have gone to be with the Lord. I will see you there my friend and you will always be in my heart.
