Peter Ronstadt Obituary

Peter Ronstadt, a former Tucson Police Chief, musician, and beloved husband, brother, and father, has died peacefully from natural causes, surrounded by family on Sunday, December 29. He was 82.

Peter Ronstadt was born and raised in Tucson, Arizona and attended school at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic School, Doolen Junior High, and Tucson High School. He graduated from the then new Catalina High School in 1959.

Peter, the son of Gilbert and Ruthmary Ronstadt, grew up in a musical family, always singing, and learning to play the guitar. As a young boy, he was a long-time member of the Tucson Boys Chorus, where he excelled as a soprano, performing many solos from songs as varied as "Estrellita" to "Ave Maria," as the famous choir toured the U.S. When his voice changed, Peter began focusing more on the country, rockabilly and early rock and roll that was emerging at that time. He was a member of a band, The Nightbeats, which released a few singles, including "Lonesome Road Rock" and "Doreen" in 1959. These, and some others, can still be heard on YouTube and streaming services like Spotify and Apple under "Pete Ronstadt and the Nightbeats." He later teamed up with sisters, Linda and Suzy (Gretchen) to form a folk trio, The New Union Ramblers, which lasted until Linda went to California to start her own storied music career. Later, Peter would perform on Linda's famous albums of Mexican music, "Canciones de mi Padre" and "Mas Canciones," earning himself a Gold Record for the former.

Peter attended the University of Arizona, was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, and earned his degree in Spanish, with minors in Latin American Government and Latin American History. During this time, he joined the Tucson Police Department in 1963, and rose through the ranks as a patrolman, detective, sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain, Major and became the Chief of Police in 1981. During his career, Peter attended the FBI Academy at Quantico as part of a partnership with U.S. Police Departments. He was instrumental in promoting Community Policing strategies, focusing on policing from a neighborhood level. Interestingly, in 1989 as Chief, while driving to work, Peter personally responded to a report of a man running into traffic. He apprehended and detained the man, who was later convicted of having killed TV actor Rebecca Schaeffer. Peter retired from the Police Department in 1992 and then acted as a freelance consultant to various law enforcement agencies around the country. Peter was also proud to be a member of the Tucson Rotary Club, The Tucson Centurions, and was a trustee for the Southwestern Foundation for Educational and Historical Preservation.

Throughout his life, Peter enjoyed music, reading, cycling, gardening and the outdoors. An avid camper, snorkeler, scuba diver, 4-wheeler and hiker, Peter enjoyed seeing as much of his home state as he could and took many trips with his family around the Southwest. He also had some memorable family trips to England and Scotland. He enjoyed taking excursions into Mexico and enjoyed the Gulf of California from both the mainland and the Baja side. Later, he had many sailing and diving trips with his wife and their friends.

A treasured husband and beloved father and brother, Peter is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jacqueline, sister Linda, and his son Philip and daughter Mindy, as well as four grandchildren, Justin, Olivia, Mia and Levi.

Per Peter's wishes, no service will be held, but as he was a big supporter of both the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum and The Salvation Army, donations to those organizations are much appreciated.

RIP Peter Rondstadt - I remember back in the early 60s when I was a Police Records Supervisor at the TPD. Peter was a fairly new Police Officer. One evening shift Peter came into the Records Section, very red faced asking who owned a certain car parked outside (It was mine). He said his Sargeant asked him to go inside and find out who the owner was as Peter had "hit my car" and he was very upset (I think mainly because there wasn't any damage). I went out side to check as Peter's Sargeant was standing with his arms crossed. I remember saying the SGT. ("Really"), as I saw nothing wrong with my car - a mere scratch on the rear bumper. I mentioned to the Sargeant whom I had known or a while and said I saw no damage; my car was not "damaged" and I think, (I hope) the Sgt was embarrassed. I never knew at that time that Peter Rondstadt had a sister Linda who was a very popular sister. As the years passed and I left the TPD, I never saw Peter again. This was a nice, memorable "moment" in my life. God Bless you Peter, R.I.P. Marie Brophy (Logie)

Here was Pete, front right, with his group The Nightbeats in 1959. They had several hit records including Lonesome Road Rock.

I knew Pete in high school. In addition to being a quality person he was a very talented singer. He recorded for me on the Zoom Records label and was our number one artist. Working with him was always a pleasure. His loss is a loss not for just the family, but also the community, and actually everybody in the world that enjoyed his singing voice. Rest in peace my friend. You did good.

To my beloved Ronstadt Family. The friendship and joy you gave through many years will forever be unforgettable.

When you dropped everything and played for my Wedding in Ventana (even secretly did the dishes ), I will never ever forget a single moment of that love. Micheal has his buddy back and are most certainly filling Heaven with your happy tunes and talent. I, we, will never forget you for a single moment. Love, Jodi Swickard

Sorry I didn't have the opportunity to meet you Peter. I do vividly recall seeing you and other family members sing together when Linda was still in high school at Catalina. Music was a precious gift from your parents. Berna Schmitt (now Cliffe).

Our deepest condolences to Jacque, Linda, Mindy, Phillip and the Ronstadt family.
I have known Peter since our early college days when we were fortunate to meet his parents Ruthmary, Gibby, sisters Suzy and Linda and younger brother Michael. In those days he honored us by serving as our best man at our wedding. Thereafter our children were able to share some birthdays and holidays together. Always the dedicated father and husband.
Our paths crossed again in 1987 as we both served on the Arizona Criminal Justice Commission. Always the consummate and dedicated professional. We have always been proud of Peter´s years of service both as Police Chief and the community endeavors he championed. Though we moved away from Tucson, our dear memories of Peter and his family remain with us to this day. Our heartfelt prayers and condolences to the family.

My deepest sympathies to Peter's family as they mourn his loss. I met Peter when he was the Chief in Tucson and I was the executive director of the Police Executive Research Forum (PERF). He served on the PERF Board of Directors. I enjoyed getting to know him and work with him. He was a thoughtful person who always had the best interest of the community and department in mind when fulfilling his responsibilities as chief. Although I had lost touch with him, I have often thought about him over the years.

Chief Ronstadt wasn´t just my boss-he was a leader who shaped the trajectory of my career and my life. He saw potential in people, even when they doubted themselves, and had an uncanny ability to bring out their best. I´ll never forget the day he promoted me to sergeant, then later to lieutenant. Those moments carried more weight than just a new rank; they came with his trust, something he did not give lightly. But the greatest honor was when he made me his Internal Affairs commander-a position that required not just leadership but also integrity, discretion, and unwavering fairness. It was a role of highest trust, and the fact that Chief Ronstadt believed I was the right person for it meant the world to me. Working under him, I saw firsthand his vision for policing. He believed in community policing long before it became a buzzword. To him, law enforcement wasn´t about control-it was about partnership, respect, and serving with dignity. He led with humility, intellect, and, above all, humanity. Chief Ronstadt wasn´t just a brilliant cop; he was a deeply layered man. He could transition seamlessly from discussing strategy in the department to strumming his guitar and sharing his love for music. His passion for life, whether it was in his work, his music, or his family, was infectious. His legacy isn´t just in the department or the policies he implemented but in the countless lives he touched-mine included. I´ll forever be grateful for his guidance, his faith in me, and the example he set. He didn´t just make me a better cop; he made me a better person. Rest in peace, Chief. You will be missed.

Chief Ronstadt was assigned to the Training Academy as a Sergeant when I met him. He encouraged me to become a police officer and I graduated from the Academy in 1982. This was Chief Ronstadt 's first academy class during his tenure as Chief. He was a good friend, mentor and excellent leader. Prayers to the Ronstadt family. He will be missed by many in the community.

I was the Tucson Police Department Legal Advisor from 1990 to 1994. Peter, essentially, was my boss. I saw him every working day. I found him to be tough, smart, honest, and most of all a very decent human being. I think he had much respect from the men and women of the department. I enjoyed working with him and was saddened when he retired. May his memory be a blessing to all who knew him.

I first met Chief Ronstadt in a first aid class just prior to attending the TPD Academy. As a brand new Lt. he conducted the first inspection of our academy class. I remember his impeccabile uniform and command presence that morning 54 years ago. I was proud to work for him in different assignments for the next 22 years. He was a good man and I am sad to learn of his passing.

Memories of "Mindy´s Dad" when she and I traveled together in Up With People bring a smile. Being with them in Tucson - hand painting Easter eggs (glasses sitting on the end of his nose) , him clearing snakes from the driveway, laughing at my southern accent and always being made to feel like family.

Chief Ronstadt was my first chief. He aways made it a point to make it to briefings so the troops knew he appreciated them and it wasn´t unusual for him to stop and 84 you on a traffic stop. What a great leader. RIP Sir

This is a very sad bit of news. Chief Ronstadt was an example for many of us on the department, and his passing brings home the brief tenure of life. But he lived a full life, and will be fondly remembered by those who had the privilege to serve under him. May God receive him into his heavenly reward.

My wife Linda and I are saddened by the death of Peter Ronstadt. We have known Pete, Jacque, Phil and Mindy for many years and both of our children, Rick and Kristi, attended grade and high school with Phil and Mindy respectively and we recently were honored to have Mindy sing at our 55th anniversary party. Pete and I were also Boy Scout Webelos leaders together when our boys were 10 years of age. Our condolences go out to the entire Ronstadt family for the loss of their husband, brother, father and grandfather.
