Phillip Speer Obituary

Colonel Phillip B. Speer made his transition on June 17, 2011 in the loving hands of a dozen close family members. Phil was born the youngest of 15 children on January 31, 1927 in Deering, MO to Dr. Asier Jacob and Bertha Speer. Prior to graduating high school, Phil was drafted into the Army toward the end of WWII. After completing military duty, he followed his eldest brother, French, to Tucson, AZ to complete high school and subsequently attend the U of A where he earned a degree in Sociology and was commissioned a 2nd Lt. in the Army. It was in Tucson that Phil met and married the love of his life, Sylvia Petersen, in 1948. Together they built a life and family that includes five children, ten grandchildren and 12 (and counting) great-grandchildren. Pursuing a dual track career, Phil was President and with Sylvia owned a successful wholesale school supply and drugstore sundry company. At the same time, Phil worked and studied diligently in the Army Reserves, earning military Masters Degrees and rising in rank to that of "Full Bird" Colonel. In November of 1979 he was called to active duty at the Pentagon, working directly for the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He was later appointed Reserve Advisor to the Deputy Chief of Staff for ROTC and during this tour earned a civilian Masters Degree in Human Resource Development from George Washington University. Col. Speer retired from active duty in May of 1982 with the Army band and dignitaries present in his honor at an outdoor celebration on the Chesapeake Bay. His outstanding military service was punctuated by the prestigious Legion of Merit Medal and Bar. In retirement, Phil's fertile mind conceived several entrepreneurial projects which he pursued passionately. As well he approached the U of A to create a seniors' curriculum and subsequently cofounded SAGE, U of A's extended university program devoted solely to seniors. Phil lived his entire life serving others. He was kindness, generosity, gentleness and strength personified. One never stops missing a man like Phil Speer. Please help us celebrate his life on Friday, July 1, 2011 at 12:00 noon at the Unity Church of Phoenix, 1500 East Greenway Parkway, followed by a brief, 30-minute graveside service including full military honors at 2:30 p.m. at the National Memorial Cemetery of AZ, 23029 N. Cave Creek Rd. in Phoenix. Arrangements by FAMILY BURIAL AND CREMATION.

Bompy, you were a loving father (in-law) to me, and a splendid, "love them cheeks" grandfather to my children. There is not a day that passes that I don´t think of the beautiful times we shared as a family. I will love you and your precious Sylvia, forever.

My grandfather was no ordinary man, no Sir; he was my hero and an American treasure. I looked up to him in many ways...his humble nature, positive attitude and enthusiasm for life are things to model a life after. He shaped my life in more ways than I can describe and I intend to pass along his philosophy and methodology to his great-grandchildren. His legacy will live in me, forever.

You are an inspiration and the bedrock of the Speer family. Thank you for setting such a positive example for me.

Godspeed, Grandfather

Dad, I love the sound of that - Dad! Thank you for all you were to us in this life and the shining example you lived. You showed us the way to live and enjoy life by living for and giving to others. You influenced my kids greatly. You always had time for anyone who need you, and you were a busy man in great demand. But you still gave of your time - the most valuable thing anyone has and you gave it freely. I wish we had more to spend together. You touched so many lives positively I am just now learning the magnatude of your influence. I love you more each passing moment. I'm so very proud of your life acomplishments and will always cherish the memories.

Words cannot express how deep this loss is to the Speer family. I had the pleasure of meeting Phil 35 years ago and the honor of becoming his daughter-in-law a year later. Although life takes us in different directions sometimes, I felt so blessed that I remained close to the Speer family and was still considered a Daughter-in-Law. Caring, loving, compassionate, honest.... those are just a FEW of the many words that could be used to describe him. All his grandchildren and great-children were truly blessed to have a Grandfather like him. It was so evident by the fact they all came to Tucson at some point while he was in the hospital to visit him - from all over the country - and as far away as Singapore. There were at least 10 family members by his side when he left us. That says a lot. I always considered Phil the "rock" of the Speer family and he will be missed more than ever. I love you, Phil... and will always keep your memory alive in my heart. Thank you for all you were to me.
