Rick Ocker Obituary

Rick L. Ocker 9/9/1947 - 12/7/2015 Rick, 68, is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Pat and daughter, Tracey Green (Jim) of San Antonio. To his granddaughters, Brenna, Madison and Peyton, also of San Antonio, he was lovingly known as "Grumps". To his great-granddaughter, Ryland he was just called "Great", which sums him up in one word. He is also survived by brothers, Timmy (Stacey), Danny and Tommy Domino; aunt, Lee Blair of Texas and many cousins in Texas, Minnesota, North Dakota, Arizona and California. Rick moved to Globe, AZ, from Minnesota in 1970, then to Tucson in 1979 where he hired on with what was then Southern Pacific Railroad in Train Service, and in 1992 transferred to Engine Service when he became an Engineer until his retirement from what is now Union Pacific Railroad in 2012 after 33 years. Rick was an avid bridge player having come in first in one of the Knock Out sessions in the November ACBL duplicate bridge tournament, winning a trophy. He was also an award winning pool player. He had put together a 23 ball run in college, winning him the right to play the renowned pool player Willie Mosconi, Rick lost. Rick was always physically active and loved to ski with his granddaughter, Brenna. He liked to challenge granddaughters, Madison and Peyton in gymnastics (a sport he won many awards in) swimming and cards. He was a voracious reader and did crossword puzzles…in ink. He was a foodie and enjoyed cooking with his wife for their special group of friends. Rick was an extraordinary man who loved history and traveling, always in search of the perfect Chiles Rellenos. He was loved by many and will be missed by all who knew him. Rick abhorred suicide. It is an act he never would have knowingly committed. Because of the rapid decline in his cognition, it is believed he was suffering from a tumor or a series of mini strokes. A Celebration of his Life will be held in March, 2016. Dad, You've been gone for 3 months now. I'm glad you came to visit me in my dream and to let me know that you were okay. I wish you would come more often because I really miss you. I thought time would make this easier but it doesn't. I still feel lost without you. You are on my mind all the time and the tears still flow daily. I just can't believe that you are gone. That reality hits me at the worst times. Please know that you were everything to us and things will never be the same without you.

Rick was a great guy, well liked by everyone. Terrific dry sense of humor, and a down-to-earth sense of what was important and what really mattered. His life mattered and did make a difference to many in his railroad family. He will be missed. Our condolences to his wife and family.

It has taken me a month to be able to look at this obituary and all the nice messages you have all left about my dad. I can't tell you how heart broken and torn apart I am without my dad. I love him so much. He he was gone without warning and has left us all lost and with a lot of questions. My dad was the best dad anyone could have and he was nothing short of being great(which is what my grandbaby calls him). Life will never be the same without him and I appreciate that he seems to have touched everyone that he came in contact with. He was very loving, caring, and funny as hell. A piece of our puzzle in our family is missing and can never be filled. I know that my dad loved all of us and we were the most important things to him. He would have never left us on purpose. I can't wait to be with him again and I pray that he stays with us in spirit and watches over us all. I love you dad.

Dear Pat and family,
We've had a hard time trying to write this because - well - because it's hard. There aren't many people in our lives that we are always happy to see, but we can honestly say that Rick was one of those people.Whether it was going out for a birthday meal, or seeing him at the grocery store, walking the dog, or cussing at the weeds out front, it was always a fun experience.
He was always ready to lend a hand as long as you respected the boundaries (after coffee and the newspaper). And as a poor misguided liberal (probably due to something in the Moorhead water) he tolerated and kidded his conservative neighbors. We had a common love of books and scotch, and for Tim you can add pool and craft beer. He was a special guy and we will miss him.

I will never forget all the adventures we shared, all the things you've taught me and all the love you gave me unconditionally. You were the best Grumps myself, Madison and Peyton could have ever hoped for. You will be forever missed. Love you always.

Dear Friend Rick -
We wish you only 'fair winds and following seas' on your journey to your own 'Fiddlers' Green'.
It was always a great treat to lose (badly) at your pool table while enjoying your bourbon (the finest). Your total lack of bluster and gentle demeanor made it an honor to lose (every time!).
I faired no better against you when playing bridge, and enjoyed your tolerance of my play when we partnered. Never a criticism without being asked, and first rate instruction, freely given when you were.
You gave freely of your time and talent in support of the Friday Bridge Group at Casas Adobes Congregational Church. We hold your memory dear and share the pain of the loss of you with all who loved you.

I sent a card to your wonderful wife, to tell her how much I would miss such a generous man as you were to me and so many others. To tell you , you will be missed would be beyond friendship. I love you and your family. Bless you my friend and thank you for all you did and who you were.

Finding out about Rick was a shock.I knew Rick ever since he hired on with the S.P. He was a long time friend. Even though he sometimes had a grumpy disposition he and I always found ways to lighten the conversation up and laugh about life. I will miss Rick deeply. He was "top shelf" in my book. Rest in peace my good friend.
