Robert Muczynski Obituary

Robert S. Muczynski Renowned composer/pianist, lost his courageous battle with Leukemia on May 25, 2010. He was born in Chicago, Illinois, on March 19, 1929 to Irene and Stanley Muczynski (deceased). He is survived by his loving sister, Gloria and by his dear friend and companion, Harry Atwood. Considered one of America's most distinguished contemporary composers, Robert was the recipient of a Pulitzer Prize nomination, two Ford Foundation fellowships, and more than 30 ASCAP creative merit awards. His orchestral and chamber music has been featured at Lincoln Center, The Kennedy Center, Orchestra Hall in Chicago, Wigmore Hall in London, and in many other venues, world-wide. Thoroughly schooled in traditional harmony and counterpoint, Muczynski never abandoned his classical roots. The New Grove Dictionary of American Music describes his style as "earnest, economical and unostentatious, characterized by spare, neo-classical textures, a gently restrained lyricism and strongly accented, irregular meters, which create a vigorous rhythmic drive." To quote a friend and colleague: "He has spent his life trying to enhance the human spirit. He writes music from the heart." Muczynski was head of the composition department and composer-in-residence at the University of Arizona for 23 years. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Humane Society of Southern Arizona. Services will be private.

Even though I was a music education major at the U of A (not a piano major), I was very fortunate to have been a private piano student of Robert Muczynski for 3 years from 1974-1977. I thoroughly enjoyed all of the piano pieces he chose for me to work on and I still go back to them from time to time. He was always professional and had a gentle demeanor. He touched the lives of many through his music and spirit.

Bob was my neighbor on New England Avenue in the 1950s. My treat was to open my bedroom window at night and listen to his beautiful music. Amen

Robert Muczynski's music has been a living part of me since I was in ninth grade with his Six Preludes for Piano to my winning a concerto competition with his piano concerto in 1984 ( in which he corresponded with me through the entire competition; I'll always remember his taking time with me over the miles across the country ) at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio and through today. His music betters my life immensely. Be Well, all, Mark Koehler from Ashland, Ohio [email protected]

Bob and I were colleagues in the School of Music for many years, and I knew him as a composer, teacher, and performer. I remember best performing in his music for Harry Atwood's film documentary, "Bellota," in the late sixties. The quality of his music in this work as in his other compositions was first rate and is extremely well written for all instruments.

We offer our deepest sympathy. When tragedy strikes and takes the life of our loved ones, many cry out with great sorrow. Your tears are not unnoticed by the Creator of Life. Never was it his purpose for our human lives to be taken away. Although your deep pain will not easily disappear, prayer to God will bring comfort to you as you grieve. The Bible assures us God "is healing the broken hearted ones, and is binding up their painful spot." Psalm 147:3

I remember Bob very well. He was the composer-in-residence when I came to the UA Music Department in 1975. He had been there a few years by then. We were in different areas, but our paths would cross in the mailroom or the hallway and we would exchange a few thoughts from time to time. A gentle, unassuming man, he was really quite famous but never told you that. He was actually quite shy about his fame and would only talk about a premiere if I asked probing questions. I have several of his compositions on my iPod and will listen again to some tonight to celebrate his life. His musical style was clean and lean, with clear melodic ideas and crisp, well articulated rhythms. If I had to put a label on his music, I would say "energetic" and "exciting". He retired years before I did but I did see him from time to time as he wandered to the Music Library. He was really a nice guy who trained lots of future composers in his studio while continuing to turn out masterful compositions that received wide audition in the U.S. and Europe. Peace to you, Bob. You are well remembered and I'll reconnect with your music this evening.
