Spencer Block Obituary

Spencer Block March 27, 1940 - September 6, 2009 Spencer Block loved life. He loved his wife and his family. He loved his friends, his employees, and his business. He loved boating, music, and computers. He did not want to leave this life. After 4 ½ years of living with pancreatic cancer, his body finally had enough. He passed away at home, as he wished, peacefully, with his family around him. Spencer was a teacher, a librarian, a counselor, and, finally, a business owner. With his wife he started Buffalo Exchange 35 years ago. He worked there until his death. He is missed by his wife of 47 years, Kerstin; his daughters, Rebecca (Tim Haskin) and Karen; his three granddaughters, his brother, and his many friends and co-workers. There is a part of him that will live on in all of us; if we think on it, we all know what "Spencer would say and do." His ability to be fair, look at all sides of a situation, and speak the truth were hallmarks of his approach to life. His life was prolonged and nurtured by Dr. Robert Brooks, Linda Moors, and the staff at Arizona Oncology including Vickie, Jane, and Mary. Contributions in his memory can be made to the Buffalo Exchange Arts Award c/o the Community Foundation of Southern Arizona, or to the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum. There will be no services. His ashes will be distributed per his wishes. A commemorative gathering for family and friends will take place this fall.

I worked for Spencer (along with Kerstin and Rebecca too.) Spencer was a great boss and a outstanding friend. He taught me so much, and showed me the way to personal strength, which enable me to start my own business. I will miss he so. Love and light to Kerstin, Rebecca, Block family and friends and all the staff at Buffalo Exchange, you are all in my heart and prays.

I, too, wish to share my heartfelt farewell to Spencer Block, an incredible businessman/mentor, supporter of environmental causes and the arts, and an active citizen of the Tucson community who helped to challenge, inspire and motivate people. Spencer will truly be missed.

His generosity and willingness to share has made a difference to many local and community based charities in major cities and college towns across the US. His vision for a 100-year plan, his big heart, and magical combination with his wife and business partner, Kerstin, encouraged and energized others to work hard and work creatively to accomplish tasks and overcome the challenges at hand. He knew how to empower employees and how to better serve customers. Spencer truly wanted individuals who both shop and work at Buffalo Exchange to have fun and make life and work exciting, enjoyable, and an enriching experience of self-actualization. His generous spirit, sense of fairness, can-do attitude, and strong sense of socially-responsible business live on. We thank you, Spencer, for your laughter, your guidance and most of all your love, friendship, and courage.

I worked with Spencer (along with Kerstin, Rebecca and Patricia), for many years on various corporate and franchise legal matters. He was always wonderful to work with, was so sharp and had such a great approach to business. I will truly miss him although I have full confidence in those he left behind. Its always a challenge to write an obituary that reflects the person and this obituary is the best I have ever seen in this regard. His family and friends are in my thoughts.
