Stephen Terry Obituary

Dr. Stephen Terry passed away on February 11, 2025 with family by his side. The youngest of three boys, Steve was born on January 3, 1936 in New York City to James and Theodosia Terry.

Steve and his family left New York for the Tucson desert in 1941, moving to what is now the Tucson Botanical Gardens. In 1942, Steve's father assumed the role of Project Attorney at the Gila River Relocation Center, moving the family there until the end of the war. Steve shared many choice memories of those years spent with his Japanese-American friends. He moved back to Tucson after the war, where he remained for most of the rest of his life.

Steve attended Tucson High ('50-'53), graduating early, then the University of Arizona (54-57)also graduating earlyand finally Columbia Medical School ('58-'61), where he met his wife, Barbara Brown (Columbia '60).

Upon completing his residency, Steve commissioned as a Captain in the US Army Medical Corps, and with his wife and young sons, moved to Nuernberg, Germany. Steve and Barbara developed their love of travel while in Europe, something they continued together throughout their lives.

After serving his country, Steve came back to Tucson where he established a successful OB-GYN practice. He loved to bring babies into the world and devoted himself to his patients and to the Tucson medical community. Steve served on the board of ACOG (OB-GYN association) for many years and contributed often to journals and conferences in his field.

Steve left his chosen profession earlier than he would have liked, due to a severe leg injury. But in retirement, he found merry solace in music and travel, attending many jazz concerts and operas, together with his wife, Barbara.

Steve was a devoted husband, interested father, wise grandfather, and affable friend. He believed strongly in the value of education, kindness, and contributing to one's community. He passed these values along where he could, helping many along the way.

He also valued tradition. A cherished Terry tradition is the gathering of the extended clan for the reading of "Twas the Night Before Christmas" and "Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa Claus," followed by the raucous "Stocking March" to hang the stockings. He learned all these things from his mom and passed them on.

He will be missed, and he will be remembered.

Preceded in death by brothers Jim and Tony Terry, Steve's spirit lives on in his many friends and loving family: his beloved wife of 64 years Barbara Brown Terry; children Steve Terry (Pam), Andrew Terry, and Sarah Terry Nordstrom (Eddie), grandchildren Madeleine (Gabriel), Finn, Max, and Bowen Terry, and Abigail and Alexander Nordstrom, and many nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held Thursday, March 6, 2025, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and a graveside service on Friday, March 7, 2025, from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Both the visitation and the graveside service will be held at East Lawn Palms Mortuary & Cemetery, 5801 East Grant Road, Tucson, Arizona 85712.

Just learned of Steve Terry´s death today. He was my doctor from 1971 to late 1980´s. He delivered my baby girl at TMC in Dec. 1971. I remember him walking into my labor room in an elegant suit and tie. He was a wonderful doctor and friend. Always going beyond for his patients with understanding, compassion and excellent care. My condolences to Barbara and family. I have been gone from Tucson for many years, and wish I could have seen him again. Rest gently, Steve.
With love, Kay

Steve was a long-time friend and associate. Our hearts go out to Barbara and family. He was a dedicated doctor who delivered many native Tucsonans and was a champion for women. We were lucky to know him. We traveled on many medical meeting trips together and have great memories.

Dr. Terry delivered our three babies in the late 1970´s and early 80´s. My husband Bob and I were grateful for his kindness and attentive care over the years from children born, to a baby loss, and multiple surgeries. With his high standard of care, he was truly a patient's doctor. Dr. Terry remained my doctor until his skiing accident forced an untimely retirement. Even then, he was concerned about who my next OB/GYN might be.

Both Steve and Drew were students of mine at Townsend Junior High School. My condolences to you both and to your sister; you had a wonderful father! And, of course, our condolences to Barbara, your dear mother.

Bob and I moved to Pinehurst, North Carolina in 2021 so we unfortunately will not be able to attend the services. 520-780-8031 (iPhone), [email protected]

Dr. Terry was a good friend and colleague of my father Damon Raphael, M.D. Over the years we shared many trips to medical meetings with him and his wife Barbara. While I ran my dad's office for 12 years, Steve was a great resource for me,for information, sometimes for sharing supplies when we couldn't get them. I remember him as a kind, funny man. I called him "Uncle Steve". My favorite memory is of dancing with him at the Catamaran Hotel in San Diego.

Dr. Terry delivered a lot of native Tucsonans since starting his practice when Tucson was still a relatively small place. Chances are you know someone who was his patient, or who he delivered at TMC. :-)
My heartfelt condolences to his family.

Dr. Terry was my doctor from around the early 1970's to around late 1980's. I remember when he hurt his leg, I believe it was a skiing accident. He even saw me when he was on crutches, what a doctor he was, to continue to see his patients even with a bum leg! I have a cousin who was also his patient, many moons ago, but she lives out of town with her daughter. I also remember when he was somehow involved with the Gaslight Theatre. Once in a while he gave me tickets, for me and my husband to see a show. He did a hysterectomy on me in March 1978, and I still have the medical records from it! It was at the El Dorado Hospital, now long gone. I feel for your loss but may all your memories be loving and joyful ones.
