This past year has been a difficult one to say the least. Steve was taken from us over one year ago and he is missed immensely. He was a genuinely good person who inspired many botanists and general plant enthusiasts. I continue to draw on knowledge learned from him and like to think he would be proud that is teaching and mentoring have affected so many.

Jan, I was so sorry to hear about Steve. I want you to know that your friendship means so much to me and I cherish the times we spent together in Tucson. I remember the walk you and Steve and I had in Sabino Canyon fondly. My thoughts are with you, Jan. Love, Beth

I am deeply saddened to hear of Steve's passing. He was such a kind soul, a good friend and mentor. Both directly and indirectly Steve was an inspiration to me and to a generation of botanists, ecologists and conservationists. His legacy lives on with all he touched and he will be missed immensely.

Steve was dedicated to science, a truly gifted researcher, and a wonderful colleague. He was a wonderful role model for us all and especially our students. I missed him after he retired and regret that I was not able to see more of him and Jan in Big Pine. My sincere condolences go out to Jan and the rest of his family I know that this has been a difficult path for all of you.

My sincere condolences to Steve's family. I have known Steve for many years as a colleague in the Office of Arid Lands Studies, University of Arizona. Steve was a dedicated scientist, who was highly regarded in his quest for new crops. He will be missed by all.
