Steven Schulman Obituary

Steven A. Schulman educator, musician, chef and food-lover, passed away peacefully of a rare and relentless cancer at the age of 64. He is survived by his beloved wife of 32 years, Elizabeth Weiner-Schulman; his brother, Jon (Monica Bentley) Schulman of Flagstaff, Arizona; sister, Sally (Lou) Franklin of Tucson and brother-in-law, Charles Weiner of Tucson. In his extended family he was Papa Steve to Katlyn and Carson Lewis; children of Rob and Tammy Lewis and Jake and Paige Dunham, children of Mack and Claire Dunham, all of Tucson. Steve was born March 4, 1949 in Tucson to Sy and Anita Schulman. He graduated from Rincon High School in 1967 and the University of Arizona in 1972. He received a master's degree from the University in Education and Administration. Steve's passions were his wife, music and good food and wine. These truly defined him. He was given the gift of music and in turn, he gave that gift to the countless students he taught and young people he mentored. Steve taught for more than 35 years in the Tucson Unified School District, reaching children when they were most receptive to the love of learning. He was a member of the first gifted education teaching team for elementary students. He served as a music resource teacher and a member of the TUSD Arts Team. Steve was a highly accomplished classical and Flamenco guitarist. He also served as a member of the U of A College of Fine Arts School of Music Advisory Board. He played in local bands throughout his life and was the heart and soul of the Temple Emanu-El Avanim Rock Band playing Rock Shabbats and a member of Klezmerkaba, playing traditional Yiddish music. He also was a founding member of the Tucson Classical Guitar Society. After retirement from TUSD, Steve thoroughly enjoyed his time working at the Folk Shop where he was a member of their musical family. Services will be held at Temple Emanu-El on Sunday, September 15, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the University of Arizona Foundation for the Steve Schulman Scholarship Fund at the U of A School of Music or to Jewish Family and Children's Services of Southern Arizona. Arrangements by EVERGREEN MORTUARY.

Mr. Schulman was my Fourth Grade Teacher at Lineweaver Elementary in the in the late seventies. I will alandt's grateful for him teaching songs from the Beatles to the folk songs of the 60s. People always asked me how I knew those songs. I told them my 4th grade teacher who had a love for music. Good bless Mr. Schulman whom I thought of often throughout my life. Rip.

I had the pleasure of working with Steve Schulman during his years as a teacher at Doolen Middle School. He was an incredibly kind, caring and gifted man. I so loved when he came into my classes and played guitar for my students. I will always cherish my years of knowing Steve.

I met Steven in 1967 through friendship with his father, Sy. I heard and saw Steven 's exceptional growth as a teacher, a musician and as a person. Steven cared about his students, both as pupils and as people, and gave them guidance in both music and life. Frank K. LaBan

One of the best teachers I ever had. I was one of those weird, space-casey, really smart kids who had trouble in school because of an inability to think inside the box. He never once treated me like a troublemaker which meant so, so much to me. He ran simulations so that we could "live" history to the best of our abilities and he taught math with a real-world problem-solving approach; a few years ago I started to learn programming and have thought of his classes several times since then. I looked forward to being in his classroom every day and now I am so sad that I never really caught up with him again. He was clearly loved and remembered fondly by so many people and an exceptional man.

Steve was my 4th grade teacher at Lineweaver elementary in 1978. I hope you know and I hope that he knew that he made a huge impact on so many young people's lives. He held a special place in my heart. Thanks, Mr. Schulman.

Steve was a very talented guy. I grew up with him and lived right down the block. In high school we played in different rock bands, but I always remembered him as a great player and a kind and gentle soul. I had the chance to see him and play with him at our high school reunion a couple of years ago and it was so much fun. We will miss you Steve. See you on the other side.

Dear Liz. I am so saddened by Steve's passing. I don't remember not knowing him and his family. We were little kids at Temple, then high school friends. He was always as others have described him... kind, caring, loving, and a terrific musician. He had a wonderful soul and will be missed by many. Love, Elaine Nathanson

Steve was a true blessing to so many in and around the Tucson community. We will feel his loss profoundly at Temple Emanu-El...his bright spirit and love of music was always evident while playing with the Avanim band. He was an amazing man who inspired so many.

As I light a Yahrzeit candle tonight in the memory of those I have loved and lost, I remember "Mr Schulman". He was a beloved teacher to my two boys, who instilled a lifelong joy and love of learning. Steve was an incredibly gifted educator and mentor. My family will forever cherish all that he did and gave to the Tucson community.

I'm so sorry Steve has passed so early. Such a talented great guy and teacher. We taught at Mission View in the early years of our careers and knew each other sporadically ever since. Such a loss!

What a beautiful life Steve led. In my interactions with him as a Doolen Middle School parent, I never felt anything but his joy of music and teaching. You will be missed by many but your contributions will multiply a million fold as your students teach others who teach others. So long, Steve.

Steve blessed my brother and I with the gift of music in our primary school years, which we now pass on to our own children. He will be missed and we send deep condolences to the family. Diana David

Mr. Schulman was a very special and well loved teacher to my daughter and her friends in the GATE program at Doolen. He was there at the crack of dawn every morning, and welcomed the little group of "early arrivers" to his classroom before the regular school day started. It was like Mr. Schulman's little "secret society" All they had to do was bang on the cooler outside his window and they would be let in to study or just hang with him. THANK YOU Mr. Schulman. Kind, patient, warm, welcoming, inspirational. My deepest condolences to his wife and family.

Mr. Schulman always had a smile on his face and was an amazing and fun teacher- I loved seeing his different guitar shirts everyday and learning from him when we did musicals. My prayers are with his family and may he rest in peace.

I remember Steve as "Dr. Midi" from his work with our Yamaha store "ProMusic" here in Tucson. He was an inspiration to every student he taught and each of us who knew him. The store was sold in the early 1990's and I lost touch but never forgot what a positive influence he was. My sincere condolences.
