Steven Weatherspoon Obituary

Steven Buckley Weatherspoon departed this world peacefully surrounded by his family on Sunday, June 9, 2024. He is survived by his wife Rosmarie (Romy) Fouad, his son Devin Weatherspoon, his stepson Amir Fouad, and step grandsons Zakaryia and Rami Fouad, his sister Janice Felty Griscom, and his brother Phil Weatherspoon. He will be remembered for his deep love for his family, his devotion to nature, and his dedication to his work as an attorney in the Tucson community and the state. Steve was born and raised in Tucson. He attended Amphitheater High School, and later the University of Arizona where he received his law degree in 1974. Steve became the go-to person in Tucson and Arizona for water security issues. The Nature Conservancy of Arizona awarded him for his work in protecting Arizona rivers and streams in 1994. Later he served on the CAP (Central Arizona Project) Board and closely worked with the Tohono O'Odham Nation on water security issues.

Steve was the quintessential hiker, backpacker, and skier. In his free time, he spent his time outdoors. He tended his rose garden with great care and battled buffelgrass in the hills around his house. He climbed most of the mountains and peaks around Tucson and in many other western States. Steve skied with a passion, including at Ski Valley on Mt Lemmon after a snowstorm, that is, if the road was open to get there. We will miss you so much Steve Weatherspoon. Donations in his memory may be made to the Community Food Bank or the Desert Museum.

In the early 1980's My work during this time was CEO of Environmental Land Planning Company. It was no secrete that anything to do with water Steve Weatherspoon was the Guru. It was very clear that his knowledge and love for the desert he was raised in was not only educational it was spiritual and with tremendous passion. So many accomplishments and laws were made that Steve was as I said the "guru". One of his greatest accomplishments with this regard is the work he did with Morris K Udall in the effort and success of bringing C A P to Tucson. During this time he lived in the central part of Tucson and was water Harvesting before it became cool. Later on I moved on to work for the place he later called home, Starr Pass. Of all the communities he could live in, he sought out Starr Pass for it's environmental significance. When we built his home he insisted that only a Prosopis Velutina tree could be planted in his front yard. And so it was written and so it would be. He was also very clear that he did not have intentions to trim it or make it anything but it's natural beauty. That tree stands today as a testament to his commitment. He kept working on nature and his concerns. One of which was to completely eradicate an invasive species "buffle grass". Lets just say he was the "man" with many thoughts that carried out action! In between the Prosopis Velutina and Buffle Grass he met and fell deeply in love with his wife Romy. It was with great pleasure that I watched their love bloom and grow and shine like the blossoms on the roses he cared for so deeply. To end, thank you Steven for all you have done, for your passion and your caring, for the accomplishments you have made to keep Tucson, your home, a Sonoran Desert. May your spirit stay with us forever in our memories of your gifts. Signed one desert rat to another.

We met Steve in 2000, when we moved to the same neighborhood at about the same time. We became friends. A year later we planned a Christmas party and invited him. Coincidentally, a few days prior I had met Romy, who was visiting from Idaho, and asked her to join us for the evening. And that was the beginning of a beautiful love affair that literally began with "Hello".
We shared many good times. Rest in peace dear friend.

My sincere condolences to the family. My husband Bill was a good friend and enjoyed his quick wit and often spoke of his work in the community.
Rest in peace Steve. Hope you and Bill are catching up on old times.

I had the priviledge to have known Steve by virtue of my daughter, Deena's marriage to Amir. The first time I met Steve at Deena and Amir's wedding my first impression of him was that he is 'Agha'(the Persian equivalent of a distinguished Gentleman). Steve was such an intellectual and I learned quite a bit about water issues impacting Indigenous Americans from Steve.
Throughout the years, during the summer, we would get together with Romy and Steve. I have fond memories of our hikes, family gatherings and dinners, swimming in the Aarre, and hanging out with our grandkids. I cherish his memory and I believe that he is in a better place looking down at us from heaven. May he rest in heavenly peace, and may God give Romy and Steve's family strength and tolerance during these difficult times.

Steve was a giant. He did more to protect the precious water resources and the dwindling riparian forests in the Tanque Verde Basin. Gracias a la Vida.

It was my pleasure to work as Steve's legal assistant for 33 years. He was not only a great boss (although a notorious procrastinator, he always met the deadline), but was a true friend who treated me with respect and kindness. While he was a legal malpractice defense attorney, his true passion was water law. He was highly respected by his peers as the local water law expert. He served all his clients with the utmost professionalism. I am sure you are hiking heaven's trails, Steve! Peace be with you!! ~ Jerri

Steve always shared his joy of life and the outdoors unselfishly.

I graduated from HS with Steve. I played HS football with him.
Of course, he was the Quarterback, smartest player on the field. After HS we hung out with the same group of friends, most of us in the same. Amphi graduation class. Steve was the first of our group to get married, first to buy a house, first to graduate from UofA, first in our HS graduating class. I was always proud to tell others about "Steve Weatherspoon
my lawyer freind". Last memories of Steve was recently going to UofA baseball games with him and other long time friends. He will be missed very much. God Bless.
