Joseph Stephens Obituary

STEPHENS, Joseph Seth, of Tullahoma, passed away on Friday, Oct. 27, 2017, at Saint Thomas Rutherford Hospital in Murfreesboro. He was 35. Seth was born in 1982 and graduated from The Webb School in Bell Buckle, in 2000, where he played his beloved sport of baseball, an avocation that he would later pass on to his cherished nieces and nephews. Family and friends note that Seth was one-of-a-kind; he was incredibly warm, caring and loyal; he almost always had a smile on his face. Friends from his school days have also been quick to point out that he possessed a brilliant and unparalleled mind; a peek through his Webb report cards reinforces this fact. Seth was a heartfelt believer in equal rights and he vocally despised injustice, be it on the ball field or in arenas of public discourse. After Webb, he attended Rhodes College in Memphis, where he studied international relations. Seth was a passionate and encyclopedic sports fan whose favorite teams included the Tennessee Volunteers and Titans, the Nashville Predators, the Boston Red Sox, the Duke Blue Devils and Chelsea Football club. In addition to sports, Seth also loved music, movies and literature, leaving behind an impressive collection of media and memorabilia from each. He is survived by his mother, Susan Rymer and her husband Bill, of Tullahoma; his father, Joe Stephens and his wife Marie, both of Decherd; two sisters, Saera Morones and her husband Jonathan, of Jeffersonville, Indiana, and Victoria Stephens, of Tullahoma; one brother, Evan Stephens, of Tullahoma; grandmother, Ethel Bennett Stephens, of Winchester; and his nieces and nephews, Malaki, Samuel and Noah Stephens, and Bella and Atalia Morones. Visitation for Seth was held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 30, at Kilgore Funeral Home where services, were conducted in the chapel at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 31, with John Bragg officiating. The family received friends on the day of the funeral starting at 12 p.m. until funeral time. Burial was in Rose Hill Memorial Gardens. Seth's family is in the process of forming the J. Seth Stephens Foundation with donations to be used to help individuals suffering from addiction. If you would like to donate, checks may be made to the benefit of J. Seth Stephens and dropped off with a family member. Kilgore Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

I remember Seth well and was in his graduating class at Webb school. He is a great person with a wonderful sense of humor and we were on the baseball team together. It was always obvious that he took his performance on the ball field seriously and that he always put more pressure on himself than he probably deserved.

I haven't connected with him in a long time and news of his departure makes me regret that.

My deepest sympathies to his family and closest friends. Seth will always be a bright spot in my memories of high school and it's more than sad hear the news of his death.
