I always found Charles to be kind and engaging on many subjects. We spoke more about Jazz than politics but we pretty much agreed on everything in those two arenas. I will miss him.

I will miss his Martin Luther King Jr. speeches during Black History Month. Charles was a great orator. Rest well Charles and my prayers are with his family.

I know Charles through the Kansas City Star, as so many did. It was impossible to miss his presence in the halls of the old building, the culture of journalism he helped better, and in the pages of the newspaper. We had some things in common, most particularly doing work in journalism while simultaneously engaging in scholarship and teaching. I was always interested in hearing what was on his mind and glad to know he wanted to hear what was on mine. The world is indeed lesser without him, but I hope to long be able to see that awesome smile and hear him laugh.

Charles' death is a terrible loss to the world of journalism and, more broadly, the mind. His mind was full not just of learning but of wisdom, and I was blessed to spend years with him at The Kansas City Star. RIP, friend. May you memory be a blessing.

Charles was a delight to work with, a mensch of a man, kind, hard-working, smart and humble. I am sorry I cannot attend the service. Those of us who were lucky enough to know him will hold his memory close.
