Clarence Fast Obituary

FAST - Clarence Robert (a.k.a. C. Robert, CR, Bob), died at the age of 87, at Saint Simeon's Home in Tulsa after a long, full, well-lived life. Robert was born in Tulsa at 23 West Fairview of Clarence Mortimer and Helen Fast on February 12, 1921. He was preceded in death by: his parents; and brother, Richard Carl Fast. Bob was a graduate of Central High School and earned his B.S. Degree in Petroleum Engineering at the University of Tulsa in 1943. In 1944 he married Edna Lee Mitchell with whom he had 3 children; Walter Mitchell Fast, Deborah June (Gustafson), and Susan Lee Michele (Schaefer). He later married the love of his life Virginia in 1963 and had 1 child Robert Eric Fast. His beloved extended family includes Virginia's children; Gary Stephen Coker, Gregg Alan Coker, and Virginia Gay (Dippel). Bob is survived by: his wife Virginia; 7 children; 15 grandchildren; and 11 great- grandchildren. Bob began working with Douglas Aircraft in 1943 as a liaison Engineer working on the Douglas Dauntless Dive Bomber ("SBD"). In 1944, he joined Stanolind Oil and Gas (later, Pan American; Amoco) in the research department. His work resulted in authoring or co-authoring 35 U.S. Patents and 25 technical papers in Petroleum engineering particularly Hydraulic Fracturing, which have contributed greatly to the recovery of oil and gas worldwide. He retired from Amoco after 33 years of service and traveled the world consulting and teaching until age 75. Bob was a distinguished member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers and recipient of numerous awards including the Uren award. He was chairman of the Mid-Continent District of API. He created his own consulting firm, Fast Engineering, FASCO. Bob served the Langley Christian Church and was awarded the honor of Elder Emeritus in 2001. He was also active in the Masons (32nd Degree). As an avid hunter, fisherman, and sailor, he traveled the globe spending quality time doing the things he enjoyed with those he loved. Bob was active in the United States Power Squadron; achieving Advanced Pilot status, 33 merit marks and serving as Tulsa Commander in 1972. Bob was one to value life and took pleasure in sharing it with his family and friends. Much of that time was enjoyed on his property at Grand Lake where he entertained, sailed, fished, hunted, gardened and golfed. If there was an opportunity to travel and see the world, he was the first to sign up! He enjoyed numerous tours around the globe with his wonderful wife, Virginia. Anyone who spent time with Bob, loved, mused and even tolerated his enthusiasm for good times. No gathering was complete without plenty of chaos; Fast entertainment at its finest! All will hold dear the many Fourth of July family gatherings with plenty of good food and fireworks. He had great influence on his children, step children and grandchildren and was a source of leadership and guidance to them all. Bob's signature on life will be well remembered and live on through those he impacted. Service will be held 11:30 a.m., Monday May 5, 2008, at Saint Simeon's Chapel, 3701 North Cincinnati, Tulsa, OK 74106. Dear Virginia and Family,

We were saddened to hear that Bob had recently passed away. Our deepest condolances. C. Robert was a delight to be with, such energy and enthusiasm. We enjoyed all the Power Squadron outings and the fun we had at your place at Gran Tara.

Charlie and Jenny send their condolences from Oxford Virginia where we are sailing a victory lap aboard our Catalina 470 Lady. Some of the skills Bob taught us enabled us to make this voyage. We fondly remember Tulsa Power Squadron Past Commander events at Grand Lake and "Dammit Virginia...". Our thoughts are with you.

To Virginia and family,
Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.

As another charter member of the Grand Lake Sail & Power Squadron, I will always have fond memories of Bob explaining the insignias on his uniform at our new member socials. He was alway entertaining and Virginia you knew how to bring out the best in him.

To Mrs. Fast and Family
I can't tell you how much it hurts me to hear the death of your husband. I remember when you and you family moved in across the street from my family way back in the 60's. I can hear Mr. Fast now yelling for Debbie, Susan, Gay, and Gregg. I remember going to Langley and having fun at the cabin with my second family...I will always treasure those memories. I love you all.
God Bless you,

C.R. was a wonderful former father-in-law of mine, and a very special friend. I always admired the way he looked at life, and how to live it. He taught me how to sail, helped me get involved with the Tulsa Power Squadron, and numerous other adventures.
My condolences go out to the Fast family.
C.R.... may your sails always be full.
