Gregory McGill Obituary

Gregory McGill

Gregory Grant McGill passed away on December 31, 2020 after a short battle with cancer.

Greg was born on December 1, 1949 in Jackson Heights, NY and was raised in Plainview, Long Island, NY. After high school Greg made his way to Oklahoma and graduated from Oklahoma City University.

During his college years, Greg worked for Steak & Ale where his passion for the restaurant industry began. Greg's career took him to many cities until he made his way back to Tulsa to operate Charlie Mitchell's restaurants. Greg partnered with Hal Walker in 1987 and together they owned and operated Magnolia Cafe, Full Moon Cafes and McGill's restaurants until retiring in 2019 to enjoy his cherished role as "Boompa".

Greg served as chairman and board member of the Oklahoma Restaurant Association, board member of the Tulsa Executive Association, Tulsa Chamber of Commerce and Call Rape.

Greg made you feel so important when dining at his restaurants, always greeting you by name and ensuring an outstanding experience from start to finish.

Greg was happy, kind, funny, loving, and optimistic under all circumstances. He was a story teller with an infectious laugh and smile that filled the room! He will be profoundly missed by his family and all who loved him.

Greg is survived by his wife, Kelli; daughters, Ryan (Alan), Brett (Brandon); sister, Nancy; grandchildren, Bella and Njorth; as well as in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews who adored him. He was preceded in death by his mother, Nancy; father, Grant; and sister, Jeanine.

We will celebrate Greg's life when it is safe to do so.

If desired, memorial contributions may be made in Greg's name to the Oklahoma Hospitality Foundation or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital

My late husband, Michael, and I spent so much time at McGills, talking with Greg, and having so many fun times there. Those times are some of my dearest memories of Michael. Greg was a very special man. My love to his family and the many, many friends that his life touched. I´m so sorry for your loss. He will be missed.

So sorry to hear of Greg´s passing. We were classmates at Plainview High School on Long Island, class of `67. I distinctly recall laughing with Greg about his decision-
along with his friend Billy- to go to Oklahoma to go to college. For Long Island guys, it was quite a move. Little did I know that I would spend my 45 year long career as a teacher at the University of Tulsa. We reconnected. Our family´s favorite dining spot was Charlie Mitchell´s. Through the years, we dined at all of Greg´s restaurants. He would always greet us and we shared warm memories.
From the kid I knew at Plainview High School, he had become the consummate restaurateur- gracious, kind and warm. I´ll miss you Greg.

To the McGill Family...We are so sorry to hear of Greg's passing. He was such a fun person and we always enjoyed the free buffet at his restaurant on Yale...always so yummy. Thoughts, prayers and love are with the whole family.

The news of Gregs passing breaks my heart. He was a great guy and the very best at what he did. I loved taking customers and potential customers to his restaurant as he always treated my guests and I like royalty.
This city has lost one one its most treasured and gregarious personalities.
My sincere condolences to Kelli and the rest of the family.
