Hugh Graham Obituary

Graham, Jr., Hugh C.

Nov 23, 1933 - May 30, 2024

Born and raised in Tulsa, Hugh graduated from Harvard College in 1955 and the University of Chicago Medical School in 1959. He completed his pediatric residency at the University of Oklahoma. He returned to Tulsa and practiced medicine until age 85.

Hugh's medical career included more than 20 years as Director of Glass Nelson Clinic and later as Director of Wheeling Medical Group. He served as Chief of Pediatrics at St. John's Medical Center (1978-79,1990-1991). Hugh valued working with students and patients, offering valued advice and celebrating their accomplishments. By providing mentorship, he changed lives.

Hugh served in the Medical Corps of the U.S. Army from 1962-64. He became Chief of Pediatrics and earned the rank of Captain.

A lifetime member of the Tulsa Figure Skating Club, he was a competitive skater in his youth. He proudly went on to represent the United States at the World Championships in both the men's and pairs events (with his sister Margaret Anne).

His involvement in U.S. Figure Skating continued as a high-level official and officer. He judged multiple World Championships and Olympic Games. He served as President of U.S. Figure Skating from 1986 to 1989 and was inducted into the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 2004. Skating became a multi-generational activity for the Grahams. The family tradition carries on today.

Known for his welcoming nature, Dr. Graham had a calming presence that put others at ease in all aspects of his life. He frequently gave presentations to large audiences who applauded his unhurried style and signature humor.

Hugh's life was filled with fun and laughter. He loved cooking and hosting dinners for family and friends, attending many OU football games, reading, downhill skiing, and caring for beloved family pets. Above all, Hugh loved his family.

Dr. Graham is survived by his wife Jeannie Graham, son Hugh Graham III, daughters Peggy Graham and Dana Graham, son Aaron Kirkland, daughter Maria Kirkland (deceased), grandchildren Emma, Paige, Abigail, Connor, Madison, Brock and Shelby, and great-grandchildren Opal and Onyx.

A Celebration of Hugh's Life will be held at the Ambassador Hotel, 1324 S. Main Street, Tulsa, November 23, 2024 from 3:00-6:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the U.S. Figure Skating Memorial Fund.
