Sarah Brown Obituary

Sarah R. Brown

1985-01-11 - 2023-05-01

Sarah Renee Brown was born in Shattuck, Oklahoma on January 11, 1985 to Spence and Janet Hummel. Sarah married Kyle Brown October 11, 2014 and the couple made their home in Sapulpa, Oklahoma. Sarah passed away unexpectedly on May 1, 2023 at the age of 38 years old.

Sarah graduated from Shattuck High School in 2003 and attended the University of Tulsa. Sarah completed her Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology with certificates in Legal and Women's Studies in 2007. She then continued her education at University of Tulsa College of Law, completing her Juris Doctor in 2010. Sarah was admitted to the Oklahoma Bar Association in September 2010. She was also a member of Tulsa County and the Cherokee Nation Bar Associations. At the time of her death she was a well-respected and recognized member of the Oklahoma legal community. Sarah was a life-long learner and completed a certificate in Sustainable Capitalism and ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) from UC Berkeley School of Law in 2022. She was also part of the 2018 graduating class of Leadership Native Oklahoma through the American Indian Chamber of Commerce of Oklahoma.

During her time at the University of Tulsa, Sarah was a member of Chi Omega Fraternity, active in leadership roles within the Sociology Department, and participated in Study Abroad programs. After her college years, Sarah continued to be an active supporter of TU through her efforts in the TU Arts & Sciences Visitors Bureau, TU Law Alumni Board, and TU Alumni Association Board. Sarah was also a certified Etiquette Trainer and had an active consulting practice. This passion was an integral part of her many contributions to TU Cane Careers for student professional development and the Oklahoma and Kansas Girl State programs.

After graduating from law school, Sarah started her legal career with the Tulsa City Council. Her career quickly took off and she expanded her legal resume to include judgeships for the cities of Tulsa and Depew, Policy Director for the Sac and Fox Nation, professor at Oral Roberts University and The University of Arkansas, and her own private legal practice. Sarah was proud to have been a Tulsa 30 Under 30 honoree. Being a passionate supporter of women and children, Sarah supported and volunteered much of her time with Tulsa Lawyers for Children. Sarah was appointed to the Oklahoma Commission on the Status of Women in 2016. Sarah was also a professional photographer, with pieces most recently featured as a contemporary artist in the Hogue 125 Inspired Oklahoma Landscape exhibit.

At an early age, Sarah developed many passions. She loved playing dress up, jewelry, softball, and cheerleading. Sarah was also very academic and loved to read and write. She graduated with honors from both high school and college. Sarah was the definition of a daddy's girl (his Punky) and will always be her mother's Sunshine. Sarah also had a passion for family genealogy and her Native American heritage as a proud descendent of the Cherokee Nation and Lakota Sioux tribes.

Of all the roles and people that Sarah served during her life, she was most proud of being a wife and homemaker. Sarah married the love of her life on October 11, 2014. Kyle and Sarah had a fairy tale romance. They loved to travel, spend time with friends and family, enjoy good wine, laugh, read, and just spend time together at home. Both were busy professionals, but their marriage and love for each other was their first priority. Together they brought out the best and brightest qualities in each other. Through their steadfast love they challenged, encouraged, and unconditionally supported each other.

Sarah cherished and doted upon her nieces and nephews. Sarah was a front-and-center aunt and never missed an opportunity to photograph family moments. From sporting events, school heritage nights to display Cherokee ancestry, being a pageant coach, and coordinating family holiday games; she was always there to offer encouragement and give unconditional love. Her legacy will live on in others as they carry forward the values and attributes she displayed to them - kindness, generosity, leadership, compassion, and loyalty.

Sarah made a lasting impact on everyone around her and will be missed greatly. She was also an organ and tissue donor continuing to positively impact people after her death. A celebration of life is scheduled at the Reynolds Center in Tulsa on Sunday, May 7, 2023 at 3:30pm. Memorial contributions may be made to Tulsa Lawyers for Children or to The University of Tulsa noting the Sarah R. Brown Scholarship Fund.

Sarah is survived by her very loving husband Kyle; parents Spence and Janet Hummel, brothers Paul Hummel (Heather, nieces Maya and Laken) and Nick Hummel (Kristin, nephews Price and Park); Kyle's parents David and Charlotte Brown and twin sister Christen Robinson (Jason, niece Abigail, nephew Aaron); and too many close friends and valued colleagues to list individually. She was preceded in death by her paternal and maternal grandparents and her dedicated dog, Sadie.

Sarah was my Aide for my last couple of years on the City Council. I think she'd just graduated law school. She was extremely smart and one of the hardest working people I've been around. She was very intuitive and frequently knew what I needed before I asked her. And she was always so cheerful. Not long after she left the Council, I needed some help with a major lawsuit that I was handling and I hired Sarah on a contract basis. She covered depositions and court appearances as if she'd been practicing law for years. I've missed working with her and I will miss her even more, now.

Without a doubt, Sarah was born smiling and never stopped. So privileged to know her, work with her (as a Commissioner and board member of the Sac & Fox) and see her continually grow in her talent, grace, faith and care for others, I shall forever be grateful for her many contributions to Oklahoma.
Like the Biblical Sarah, whose name was changed by God, our Sarah is 'a royal princess, a mother of nations to come'...She packed a lot of living here on earth.
Sweet Sarah, we shall not soon forget your beautiful light and soul. May the Angels lead you to paradise.

Sarah lit up every room she entered. She was the consummate professional, yet was fun and entirely approachable. She served on the board of directors of the Stroud Chamber of Commerce while Policy Analyst for the Sac & Fox Nation, where I had the privilege of working with and becoming friends with her and Kyle. On behalf of the Stroud Chamber of Commerce and the City of Stroud, I extend our deepest sympathy to Kyle and to her family. We are heartbroken.
