Thomas Daxon Obituary

Thomas (Tom) Edward Daxon

Thomas "Tom" Edward Daxon, former Oklahoma Auditor and Inspector and Secretary of State Finance, passed peacefully into glory at his home in Oklahoma City, OK, on November 2, 2002. Tom had been on hospice for 3 months battling chronic kidney disease, multiple sclerosis and diabetes. Tom was born in Oklahoma City on December 19, 1947, the only child of John Edward and Mina Elizabeth Marie Daxon. He graduated from John Marshall High School in 1966 and obtained 2 degrees from Oklahoma State University, a Bachelor's degree in economics, then a Master's in economic geography. He later sat for and obtained his certified public accounting designation. Between earning his two degrees Tom served two years on staff with Campus Crusade for Christ, having accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior while a freshman in college. He met his future wife Linda at Crusade's headquarters in San Bernardino, CA. They were married in 1972 in the Student Union at OSU and were devoted to each other for more than 50 years. Tom was interested in politics from a young age using his considerable leadership skills to serve as Oklahoma City Chairman of Teenage Republicans in 1966, Oklahoma Chairman of College Republicans in 1970 and later Chairman of the Oklahoma State Republican Party in 2006-2007. In 1978, Tom was elected Oklahoma State Auditor and Inspector defeating 20-year incumbent John M. Rogers, becoming the youngest person ever elected to statewide office in Oklahoma and only the fifth republican elected statewide in state history at that time. Tom modernized the Auditor's office and formed an investigative audit division which cooperated with state and federal prosecutors helping convict numerous Oklahoma County Commissioners in the 1980s, as well as exposing questionable practices in certain car tag agencies, the Oklahoma Department of Human Services and the Oklahoma Department of Corrections. In 1980, Tom won the republican nomination for governor but was defeated by incumbent democrat George Nigh in the general election. Tom joined the accounting firm of Arthur Andersen in 1983, working out of its Washington, D.C. office. There he led the first-ever audit of the federal government, developed a new accounting system for the state of Arizona, and helped resolve a major backlog of unreconciled accounts for the Resolution Trust Corporation stemming for the Silverado Bank debacle in 1988. When the largest municipal bankruptcy in American history was declared in Orange County, CA, in November 1994, Tom left Arthur Anderson to serve as interim county treasurer for Orange County to sort out the mess and help the county emerge from bankruptcy without a tax increase, which it did in June 1995. Virtually simultaneously the governors of California and Oklahoma cooperated to allow Tom to serve as Director of State Finance in the newly elected Keating administration. Tom remained with Keating for his entire eight years as governor. Following a change of administrations, Tom moved on to become interim director of the Oklahoma Corporation Commission to oversee a reorganization of the agency, then on to the state legislature as Director of the House Office of Budget and Performance Review. Tom resigned from the legislative budget office to run for Oklahoma Republican Party Chairman, winning the post in 2006. For a more detailed account of Tom's career and accomplishments please visit his Wikipedia page at Wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Daxon. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, November 18, at Heritage Presbyterian Church, 14500 N. Western Ave., Edmond, OK 73013. The memorial service will be livestreamed. Tom was a Wonderful friend. He led me to Christ. Though always a gentleman and so smart, I visibly saw a change in him and his purpose for life when he made a commitment to Christ during his freshman year of college in Chicago. He came home to Oklahoma and changed his major. He was the big brother I never had. His mom and I were great friends. Tom, like his mother, was smart, quick-witted and so much fun. He is with them now. Tom made it to my dad's funeral in November of 2004 because we literally bumped into one another on NW Expressway in OKC one evening! That was a God-thing for sure. Years ago Bill and I got an opportunity to meet Linda and their sons and thank Tom for leading us to Christ. It has been 9 months since Tom's passing but I am sure he is still greatly missed. He had such a large personality and made such a great impact on all who knew him. I am saddened that he had to leave us so young.

Just learned of Tom's passing. Tom presented a heartfelt eulogy of his grandmother Mattie in 1975 that I recently revisited with Mattie's Angell side of the family - David Saddler Angell. My thoughts and prayer to the family - like his grandma, Tom was a remarkable person. Randall Angell, grand nephew of Mattie Binning

Just learned of Tom's passing, so very sad, had hoped to see him this spring. I'll always remember Tom as that happy problem solver, he always had a really good idea, or a crazy idea, to make some aspect of life a little better. He made me smile, and helped me, and for that, I'll always be grateful. Deepest sympathies for Tom's family -- yet how lucky you were to have such a bright light in your lives for so long! Rest in peace, Tom, my friend.

When I think of Tom, the words integrity and service immediately come to mind. He cared about making the world a better place in so many ways. We met in High School but kept in touch through retirement. We both worked for the Andersen firm, giving us the opportunity to get together at company meetings. All through his life he found ways to be of service to governments with his combination of intelligence and integrity. We are all better off because of him. Those of us who us were fortunate enough to have known him were blessed by the experience.

To the Daxon family: I met Tom when he was Gov. Keating´s budget director and I was a Senate fiscal analyst, and we maintained contact throughout the 2000s. As a liberal Democrat, he and I disagreed on just about every policy issue, but he was always respectful and decent and I grew to greatly appreciate our relationship. May his memory forever be a blessing.

Linda, I am sorry to hear of your loss. Tom and I were friends from grade school through high school. Our mothers made us and another friend go to a ballroom dancing class in 6th grade. I am not sure either of us were excited about it! We shared a common interest in young republicans through our school years. Tom was a good man and an honest auditor for Oklahoma.

I am so sorry to hear about Tom. We were in teenage Republicans together and he was a big supporter of my dad when he ran for the US Senate in 1960 and 1062. Tom, like all of us and teenage Republicans loved our state, loved our country, and just wanted the best for all mankind. We have seen each other over the years whether at a funeral or some other Republican event. The world will dearly miss Tom. Peggy Crawford Alverson. So now how do I get it
