Adele Velma Cox Dungy

Adele Dungy Obituary

GARY, IND. Adele Velma Cox Dungy, devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and sister, left her earthly home bound for heaven's gate on Friday, September 5, 2008. Born to Lovell and Velma Cox on July 29, 1939, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, she attended Big Ben Elementary School and Druid High School, class of 1957. She accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Beautiful Zion Church in Tuscaloosa. Always faithful and devout, she lived her life according to God's words and always thought of others' needs before her own.

Upon completing High School she attended the School of Radiology in Blue Island, Illinois where she earned a certificate in Radiology Technology. A career which she was proud of and dedicated to at Methodist Hospital and finally St. Mary's Medical Center where she retired in 2004 after 38 years of service. Following retirement, she along with her son Jerald founded and operated Milestone Daycare where she actively shaped the lives of infants and small children throughout the city of Gary. Always putting others above self, she was able to provide love and generosity to whomever crossed her path.

In 1962 she met the love of her life James C. Dungy in Gary, Indiana and was blissfully married to him on April 24, 1965. They shared the ideal marriage for 43 years, until God called her home. To this blessed union two children were born, Jerald Calvin Dungy and April Joi Dungy.

She was welcomed at Heaven's gates by her parents, Lovell and Velma Cox, and two siblings, Jonathon and Eddie Cox.

She leaves to cherish her earthly memory, her devoted husband, James; son, Jerald (Deborah); daughter, April; grandchildren, Maatii, Jerald II, and Grace; siblings; Essie (Jack) McConnico, of Birmingham, Alabama, John (Trudy) Cox of Eutaw, Alabama, Pearlie (Willie) Seltz of Gary, Indiana, Cleveland Cox of Gary, Indiana, Lovell Jr. (Alberta) Cox of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and Cora Harrison of Gary, Indiana; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended relatives, and friends.

Visitation will be on Thursday at Guy and Allen Funeral Home, 2959 West 11th Avenue, from 12 to 8p.m. with the Family Hour beginning at 7 p.m. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, September 12, 2008, at First Baptist Church at 626 West 21st Avenue in Gary, Indiana with Reverend Bennie Henson officiating. The Internment will be at Fern Oaks Cemetery, 1518 East Elm Street in Griffith, Indiana.

Mr. Dungy and Family, May God be with you through this time of sorrow. Mrs. Dungy was a wonderful person. I didn't see her much but on occasion she and I would send students to each others centers. Our last encounter was at the Kappas' Black and White ball and she looked wonderful. She was truly a jewel. I will forever remember her kindness, love and her spirit for life. God bless you all. The funeral was a wonderful home going. I know she loved it.
