Cy grew up in Tuscaloosa and was a devoted son and caring brother. He attended Tuscaloosa High School and was a proud Black Bear from the class of '63. His first career was in the clothing industry as a Haberdasher and manager of several men's clothing stores. He then worked for Psalms Construction until retirement.
Cy was known for his smile and pleasant disposition. He had a strong work ethic and was a good leader and co-worker. He was an honest and dependable friend and a great listener.
Cy liked to duck hunt, fish, watch Alabama football, sing in the church choir and be with family.
As a husband, he was caring, attentive, and adored his wife, Vera.
As a father and grandfather, he was kind and understanding, eager to help or offer advice and someone you could always count on.
Cy also loved Jesus Christ and his church family. He was a true believer who was a brother to many and always treated people like he would want to be treated.
To his family, he was the Patriarch, brave and fearless in times of crisis and always welcoming and eager to laugh. He was dearly loved and will truly be missed by many.

Having grown up in Alabama, family is everything. And, always trying to get the family together was a goal my grandparents, my mom, Phyllis Malatino, and her brothers (Cy, Glenn and Keith) prioritized. Wed always get together on the weekend for potlucks; share Christmas Eve together; wed meet at the cemetery to have family reunions and gather together with all of our extended family too.
My Uncle Cy, Jr. was a big proponent of keeping to these traditions. He was a born leader and always said the family prayers which were like you had been to church. He had a great sense of humor and always had a smile on his face.
Aunt Vera, I know that you have lost your other half and its never going to be the same without him. You and Cy were meant to be and your marriage was a role model of devotion and love. Thank God that you have your family to support you and hold you up now. Let them comfort you.
Michael, as the oldest you might feel like you have to be strong; but its okay to lean on others now for encouragement.
Tray, my heart hurts for you as the last living Cyrus Patten Howell. Youre in my prayers.
Kimberly, girl, I dont have words to begin to touch your pain. As you were Daddys Little Girl, and the apple of his eyes.
Dylan, Ashley, Nicholas, Hannah, Matthew, Landon and Laura Beth, your Paw Paw was a role model. Hold on to all the great memories and joy you felt around him. This time is very sad and difficult; not because youre concerned about him(because you know hes in heaven) but for those of us who are left behind, we will always have a piece of our heart missing. Be there for one another and it can make times like these more bearable.
Cy made it very clear how proud he was of his family. Hed beam with happiness just talking about you all.
Its so hard to believe that all of my moms brothers are no longer alive. She and my dad, Tony, were very close to all of them and will have an empty part in their heart aching for them.
There are so many lives touched by my uncle and as we all grieve we can also celebrate the wonderful man that he was.
Im here for you. If you need me, all you need to say is pray for me.
May the Lord bless you and keep you all comforted and in peace. I love you.
Ill miss you Uncle Cy!!!

I have a lot of great family memories in Alabama. We had so many great traditions that kept us in touch with each other on a weekly basis. Sunday dinner, 2 yearly family reunions with our extended family and every Christmas Eve we always got together at Maw Maw and Paw Paws house. Uncle Cy was a huge proponent of making sure we all kept to those traditions.
Its hard to believe that all of my maternal uncles have died. I have so many fond memories of them.
One thing I will always remember about Uncle Cy was his love for the Lord. He would always lead the family prayers like a Baptist minister and make you feel like youd been to church.
My heart breaks for you, Aunt Vera. There was never a doubt that yall were meant for each other.
Michael as the oldest you may feel a lot of pressure to be strong right now, but this is the time you let your loved ones help to hold you up.
Tray, know that my heart grieves for all of you. I wish I were there. Hold on to your faith.
Kimberly, girl, Im at a loss for words because dads are very special people in our lives and I know you were Daddys little girl. Im praying for the Lord to comfort all of you.
Dylan, Ashley, Hannah, Matthew, Nicholas, Landon and Larabeth - your Paw Paw was an amazing man with a lot of pride for his beautiful family.
But, I cant forget my mom being the last of Cy, Sr. and Ruths children to live. I know youre feeling empty and that this cant be real. You were so close to all of your brothers and had an amazing relationship with Cy, Glenn, and Keith.
Its those of us who are left behind who really suffer now; because we will truly miss him. Im sending great big hugs and a promise that I will be praying for strength, peace, and comfort today and the next days ahead. I love you all.

Cy ranks in the category of 'FINEST MAN I HAVE EVER KNOWN'. He was everything written. I enjoyed everyday that I was blessed to have worked beside him, he touched my life in ways that I carry today. I witnessed him do the same in the lives of so many others. Vera and his wonderful family were so blessed by him, but he was more blessed by them and he let others know that. What a friend he was to me and to so many others. He was so giving. He was so kind. He was so respected. He was so loved. Yes, this man lived life on earth to rejoice in heaven. I rejoice in his celebration.
Thank you Cy Howell!
