Everett Powell Obituary

TUSCALOOSA| Everett Cameron "Buddy" Powell, Jr., was born on November 13, 1944 in Tuscaloosa, and died March 23, 2014 in Tuscaloosa, surrounded by his family. Memorial Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Christ Episcopal Church with The Rev. David Meginniss and The Rev. Dr. Catherine Collier officiating and Heritage Chapel Funeral Home & Cremations, a Dignity Memorial Provider, directing. A reception will follow after the service in Randall Hall at the church.
He attended Tuscaloosa County High School and The University of Alabama where he was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity, and graduated with a degree in Chemical Engineering. He was deeply loved by his family and friends as a son, brother, father, and grandfather. He was preceded in death by his parents, Louise Kuykendall Powell and Everett Cameron Powell, Sr. He is survived by his beloved wife Catherine Coe Powell, his daughter Catherine Powell Stephens and her husband Kevin, his daughter Cameron Powell Hardin and her husband Chuck, and his son, Everett Cameron "Tripp" Powell, III, and his wife Lesley, his sister Camille Powell Cochrane and her husband David, his sister Marie Powell Wolfe and her husband Carl, and her children Lance Bailey and Shelley Bagwell, and his grandchildren Charles Hardin, Ross Hardin, Anna Hardin, Sarah Beth Hardin, Leigh Powell, Mallory Hoover, Elizabeth "Libby" Powell, Logan Stephens, and a Stephens baby due to arrive in October of this year.
Buddy grew up in the Tuscaloosa area, and the improvement of his hometown remained his passion for the rest of his life. He committed his life to community service through numerous, often anonymous, groups including the Tuscaloosa Chamber of Commerce, and serving as chairman of Tuscaloosa Parks and Recreation Authority. He committed himself to serve in his community to make the lives of young people better, and had a deep impact on all those that he knew.
In 1977, Buddy's entrepreneurial spirit led him to form Buddy's Food Mart, which has grown into a Tuscaloosa landmark. Shortly thereafter, he purchased Kuykendall and Powell Oil Company, a family business now owned and operated by the third generation of his family.
Buddy also had a deep love of sports, especially Alabama football and basketball. Saturdays in the fall with his family are some of our most precious memories of him, and he loved being a supporter of the Crimson Tide.
Pallbearers will be Scott Goldsmith, Michael Echols, Thomas Patton, Robert Monfore, Roger Taylor, Curtis Hall, Wayne Hutton, Gaius Whitfield, Hardy McCollum, and Walter Gary.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Bethany Village at Camp McDowell, c/o Christ Episcopal Church, 605 Lurleen B Wallace Blvd N, Tuscaloosa, AL 35401.

Much love and many prayers for Cameron and the Powell family! Mr. Powell was so very generous (anonymously) to many families in need at my former school, Northington Elementary. Mr. Powell's generosity and thoughtfulness greatly impacted many children! He was truly a blessing who stored up many treasures in heaven{Matt 6:20}and served others in love {Matt 25:40}!

Guess I've known Buddy since 4th grade. He was a good athlete in most sports. Not biggest or fastest, but intelligence and will to win made him a tough competitor. He carried those traits throughout his life and in service to others. Go in peace...

Prayers and sympathy in your loss of husband, father, and to the grandchildren and other family members. I remember Tripp and Catherine as students at WFS and their good parents who were very involved in school life.

Buddy was a friend to so many of us. What an impact he has had on our community, personally and professionally. He leaves a void that will be difficult to fill. You are all in my prayers.

I am deeply sorry for your loss. Buddy was a supporter of education and was committed to helping the students at Central High School flourish. His generosity to the cheerleaders of CHS will always remain close to my heart. Know that the God of Abraham has wrapped his arms around you and is walking with you on this journey. My prayers are with you Catherine, Cathy and Tripp. I am a call away. Donna G. Winn

To the Powell family, I pray you find comfort and peace in your time of sorrow. I would like to pay my respect to Buddy in a few words here as I'm not able to travel to Tuscaloosa at this time. As a long time employee, I am grateful for the opportunity to work with Buddy and learn information and skills that would better my position in the company. Buddy not only treated me like a valued employee but a friend and family. He would work side by side with any employee to complete a project or fix something that was broken. He helped me numerous times in my life with advice, praise and financially. I always had respect for his love of the convenience stores and his determination for their success. His three point check system for accuracy in the office that drove us crazy but knew he was correct. I walked that "Green Mile" down the hall many times when my name was called, knowing he was going to challenge me and correct whatever the situation. And sometimes it was just to see if I was doing okay. I have truly missed working with Buddy since my health problems took over my capabilities, now I will truly just miss him.

To the family: Buddy touched many lives in a very special way including mine. Although we lost touch I often thought of him and how special he was. I will always remember our weekend steaks. God bless all the Powells especially Cathy, Tripp, and Catherine. With heartfelt condolences,
