Gladys Calhoun Obituary

HOMEWOOD Gladys Eatman Calhoun, age 95, of Homewood, died June 8, 2007. Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, June 17, 2007, at Ridout's Valley Chapel Homewood with Rev. Buzz Barrett officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery with Ridout's Valley Chapel directing. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the funeral home.

She was the daughter of Samuel S. Eatman and Viola Marlowe Eatman, the sister of Lucille Gamba of Aiken, S.C. and the late June Ola McCary, and the beloved wife of the late Waldo Franklin (Cal) Calhoun.

Survivors include her children, Carolyn Marlowe Calhoun Battle, Ph.D. of Timonium, Md., James Franklin Calhoun (Brenda) of Homewood, David Hudgins Calhoun, Ph.D. (Lin Fang, Ph.D.) of Leonia, N.J. and Anne Eatman Calhoun, R.N. (Richard Ikeda, Ph.D.) of Fairfax, Va.; grandchildren, J. Wesley Calhoun (Meredith), Susan Marlowe Battle-McDonald (Chris Battle-McDonald), Cynthia Lynn Battle, Ph.D. (Esteban Cardemil, Ph.D.), Michelle Calhoun Finney (Greg Finney), Matthew Franklin Calhoun, Robert Calhoun Ikeda and Melissa Calhoun Ikeda; and six great grandchildren.

Mrs. Calhoun was born February 24, 1912, in Mantua, Greene County, Ala. Gladys was a 1932 graduate from the University of Alabama in education and lived for several years in Tuscaloosa. She was the owner of Calhoun's Shoes in Homewood, and member of Trinity Methodist Church and the Homewood Beautification Board. She inspired not only her own family but also many young people to get an education. She did volunteer teaching and was an avid bridge player, a lover of books and history, a member of the Eleanor Hoard Club, and was active in her church circle. At her home for 60 years on Ridge Road at Mayfair, she made many friends and was loved by all.

The family wishes to give appreciation to all the nice people at Hanover Health, where she lived for two years.

In lieu of flowers, anyone who desires may make a donation to the Fairhaven Fountain of Love, 1520 Cooper Hill Road, Birmingham, AL 35210.
