Coach Rutledge helped Coach Powell teach us young linemen the fundamentals of playing Offensive Line in 1981-1982! As the dorm director during those same years, he used his nightly walk around Bryant Hall checking on all of us to teach us the fundamentals of manhood! Coach and Mrs. Rutledge were very kind to my wife and I during the time we lived in Bryant Hall when I was a GA for Coach Stallings! God Bless the Rutledge Family! You have our condolences for your loss!

One of the saddest things that Jack ever shared with me was that in a burglary of his home several years ago, someone had stolen all of his UA National Championship Rings. Through and through, a true gentleman!! I was a student at Demopolis Junior High back in the 1960's where he coached prior to arriving at UA. He will be greatly missed.

Coach Rutledge coached my position in 1967 and 1968 before I injured my back, had a spinal fusion, and ended my career on the sidelines. He was always positive and supportive even when I was missing blocks or otherwise being out maneuvered. The smile you see in his photographs was not just for the photo opportunity. He always lifted my spirits, and the last time I saw him...in 2017 at the Bryant Museum when I was doing research for the book I was writing about my time on the gridiron playing for Coach Bryant (titled FOREVER:An Alabama Football Memoir) he sat down and talked with me for half an hour, helping me make some connections to those days. He did then what he had always done...helped me do a lot better than I ever could have done on my own. Thanks, Coach. I still owe you.
