Jim Myers Obituary

TUSCALOOSA Jim Myers, age 76, of Tuscaloosa, died Thursday November 8, 2007, at Druid City Hospital after suffering from Parkinson's disease. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 9:00 PM tonight at the Tuscaloosa Memorial Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, November 13 at St. Francis University Parish. Burial will follow at Tuscaloosa Memorial Park with Tuscaloosa Memorial Chapel Funeral Home directing. Pallbearers will be Bill Owen, Jack Kubiszyn, Will Bright, Billy Clements, Mark Bohnet, Ted Cone, Arturo Otero, and Dave Ryan.

Mr. Myers was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, two sisters, an infant child, Mary Myers, and his first wife, Patricia Taylor Myers. Survivors include his six children, Ronnie Myers and Roger Myers (Sherry) of Tuscaloosa, Rick Myers (Wendy Yang) of Palo Alto, California, Mimi Collins (Michael) of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Alice Hagler (Steve) of Augusta, Georgia, and Amy Nelson (Kerry) of Phenix City, Alabama, his fourteen grandchildren, his brothers Charles Myers and Pat Myers, his sister Catherine Adamo, numerous nieces and nephews and his wife Carol Culpepper Myers.

Jim Myers was born in Laurel, Mississippi on June 6, 1931. His lifelong love of the drugstore business began when he was just nine years old. He attended professional school at Howard College (now Samford University) in Birmingham in 1951, earning his pharmacy degree at the age of 20. He worked at Carter Drug in Selma and moved to Tuscaloosa in 1964, where he worked at Harco Drug for ten years. He opened his first Jim Myers Drug store in the Alberta area in November 1974. From that small store, he and his son Roger grew the business into the largest and most successful independent pharmacies in the area, if not the entire Southeast.

Jim was an innovative and creative force in the Tuscaloosa business community, maintaining a service-oriented pharmacy that caters to the needs of its clients. He pioneered many firsts that not only made his business a success, but also a model for how small businesses can enrich a community, including providing a fleet delivery service, home health care services, diabetes and blood pressure testing, durable medical equipment, and orthotics and prosthetics. He has been honored by many local and national groups and won many awards, including the Small Business Person of the Year of Alabama award in 1992, the 1994 Dupont Company Innovative Pharmacy of the Year Award, and being named One of 50 Exceptional Pharmacies in the Nation by Drug Topics Magazine in 1995.

Jim Myers was well known for his never-flagging energy and enthusiasm. He was extremely generous and a great supporter of those in need. He had a wonderful sense of humor, a quick wit and an uncanny intelligence. Jim was a tireless storyteller and truly entertaining. His mother was from Sicily, and he was an avid Italian chef and was very proud of his heritage.

Jim was especially close to his six children, who adored and loved him dearly. They wish to express their deep appreciation to all his friends, employees, customers and colleagues who have supported and loved him through the years. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research (Church Street Station, P.O. Box 780, New York, NY 10008-0780) and Hospice of West Alabama.

It was a pleasure doing business with him and we always looked forward to him calling in to order and give us the news from Alabama and tell us of his escapades in Italy. He will be missed. Ronnie, Rick, Roger (and your mom and sisters I did not know as well) My father died two years ago (November 9) and I am so sorry to hear about your father now. He was a great example of the combination of successful businessman and caregiver to the community - so very rare. Roger, you certainly have continued the family tradition with the uncompromised care you currently give to my family. Thank you.

To the Children of Jim Myers:
Your Dad was a wonderful man. There will never be another like him. He was the 1st pharmacist that my husband and I used when we got married in 1964. He was with Harco in the Alberta Shopping Center. We were so happy when he opened his own store some years later. There was no question as to where we would do business.
Mr. Myers always greeted his customers by name as they entered the store. He had a great memory and no matter where you would see him, he called you by name.
His presence will be greatly missed in this community. God Bless all of you.

To the family of Jim Myers. I worked for 8 years with Mr. Myers in his first store and in the Alberta store. I loved him like my own granddad and have many wonderful, some funny, memories with him. Everyone in the Myers family was always so nice to me and my family. Mr. Myers gave my sister a job when she needed it and always had open arms to me. I will never forget him and my prayers are with the family in this time of sorrow and celebration of a wonderful life. Thank you Mr. Myers for my first job and an experience I have never forgotten.

Amy, I am so sorry that I did not hear of your Father's passing until you had already left Phenix City. I do not know if I will be able to attend the service or not. If someone is coming up, I will try to catch a ride with them. I know you and your family have been through a lot this year, but through it all, you will always have your memories and know how much your parents and their love for you, your brother and sisters meant to each of you.

There are no words to express the sadness in my heart over the loss of "Mr. Jim." From the time I first met him in 1986, he was a shining example of charity in it's purist form. He was kind, thoughtful, honorable gentleman and it was my pleasure to have known him. Roger, to you and all your family---I am so very sorry for your loss. May God continue to bless and keep you in His love, grace and mercy.
