Dr. Morris Lehman Mayer

Morris Mayer Obituary

TUSCALOOSA Dr. Morris Lehman Mayer, for many years a distinguished professor of marketing in The University of Alabama School of Business, died February 15 at DCH Regional Medical Center. He was 82. Dr. Mayer had suffered from Parkinson's disease.

Dr. Mayer was born December 14, 1925, in Demopolis, the only child of the late Lehman M. and Anne R. Mayer. He graduated from Murphy High School in Mobile and received his baccalaureate degree from The University of Alabama. He earned the master's degree from New York University and the PhD degree from Ohio State University. Dr. Mayer served in the United States Army in Europe in World War II and later during the Korean Conflict.

Dr. Mayer was professor of marketing and management in the UA business school, for several years chairman of that department, and holder of the Bruno Chair. He was active in the Tuscaloosa Chamber of Commerce and served on the board of the Alabama Retail Association.

Survivors include his wife, Judith Morton Mayer; daughters, Susan M. Bruchis (Marcus) and Betsy A. Mayer; and grandchildren, Michael and Leah Bruchis.

Honorary pallbearers are Tom C. Canterbury, James Cashman, Phillip Cook, Tom Davis, Ronald Dulek, Larry Foster, R. Jones Fowler, Mickey Gee, Fred Goosen, David. J. Heggem, Jason Kellen, Troy Lampley, J. Barry Mason, Brad Moody, Adam Muhlendorf, Chuck Odewahn, Clemens Reimer, Andrew Todd, and Leon Weinberger.

Visitation is scheduled for Sunday, February 17, from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Parlor of Alston Hall, fourth floor, on the UA campus. Graveside services are set for 4 p.m. in Tuscaloosa Memorial Park on the Old Birmingham Highway. Memorials may be directed to the building fund of Temple Emanu-el, P.O. Box 3066, Tuscaloosa, AL 35403; or to The Morris L. Mayer Award, Office of University Advancement, Box 870122, Tuscaloosa, AL 35487.
