Opal Levene Obituary

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Opal M. Levene, 94, of Sioux Falls, S.D., formerly of Grand Island, died Thursday, Sept. 8, 2011, at her daughter's home in Sioux Falls.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Grand Island, with the Rev. Bill Pavuk officiating. Burial will be in the Grand Island Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Apfel Funeral Home in Grand Island.

Mrs. Levene was born Aug. 8, 1917, in Grand Island to Charles and Luella (Battles) Elstermeier.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Alphe N. Levene.

Survivors of the immediate family include three sons and daughters-in-law, Alphe "Al" and Pat Levene of Omaha, Robert "Bob" and Sally Levene of Grand Island, Larry and Jan Levene of Hendersonville, N.C.; one daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Bill Kubat of Sioux Falls, S.D.; 13 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren.

She attended Seedling Mile School and graduated from Grand Island Senior High with the Class of 1938. She was united in marriage to Alphe N. Levene on June 17, 1939, at St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Grand Island. The couple lived in Grand Island until moving to Polk in 1949. In 1953, they relocated to St. Paul, where she became employed with Elstermeier Floral Company. They resided in Beatrice from 1964 until moving to Grand Island in 1989. While in Beatrice, Mrs. Levene was employed with the Lutheran Hospital and Good Samaritan Center. She retired in 1989. Mr. Levene preceded her in death in 1994.

She was a member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church, participating in a Church Circle. She also resided at Chrysalis Lutheran Home where she was a member of The Red Hat Society she was also a member of the Liederkranz Society. She was a past member of DOES while living in Beatrice, she also held memberships in the Union Pacific Oldtimers Auxiliary and the National Association of Retired and Veterans Railroad Employees. Her faith was very important to her and she enjoyed walking and being in nature.

She was also preceded in death by one brother, Virgil Elstermeier, and one sister, Bernice Krohn.
