Ovik Banerjee Obituary
LAS VEGAS | Ovik Banerjee, age 24, of Las Vegas, Nev., died on January 6, 2014. Memorial service will be held 5 p.m. Tuesday, January 14, 2014 at Sunset Funeral Home and Cemetery, a Dignity Memorial Provider. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, January 13, 2014 at Sunset Funeral Home and Cemetery.
Ovik is survived by his parents, Sati and Subhankar (Dr. Bandy) and his siblings Orunima and Anondo.
Ovik was a self-proclaimed Swiss Army Knife at the Downtown Project Las Vegas. It felt that he was omnipresent because he had a habit of showing up everywhere. His passions ranged from environment to Frisbee and from community building to the Alabama Crimson Tide.
Having attended Northridge High School he began a legacy that assured that whenever his siblings started a class, the question, "Banerjee, like Ovik Banerjee?" was always asked. He then attained his bachelor's degree in the Environmental Sciences and Biology at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. After graduating with highest honors he was selected as a fellow by the program Venture for America and he was working in the Downtown Project Las Vegas. Ovik was very proud of spending 22 years of his life in the south and escaping without a southern accent.
He touched the lives of many - much more than most can in their lifetimes; he was that special.
Friends and colleagues described Ovik as 'the kindest person on this planet', 'a gracious soul' and 'a bright light of inspiration.' He will live on in the hearts he had touched. He will remain omnipresent.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Venture for America or Leaders in Training- a 501(c)(3) non-profit organiza-tion that serves as an after school college access program for Las Vegas students. Ovik was very close with its founder, Mrs. Erica Mosca, and was a mentor and friend to the or-ganization. Donations can be made to the organization online http://leaders-in-training.org/donate/

The memorial service was so moving and also so meaningful. We always knew Akash was going to change the world because he was blessed with all the qualities of a leader. However, it was wonderful to see how much he had accomplished in his 24 years, especially the admiration and love of his peers. This is a terrible loss not only to his family, friends, and extended family, but to the world. He had so much left to do. You will be forever in our hearts, and we will always remember your infectious smile, your compassion, your energy, and most of all, your love. Rest In Peace Akash.

I went to the celebration of Ovik's life on Tuesday evening. I have never seen so many people tell such amazingly wonderful stories about someone. Ovik truly honored his family with all of the good he did. Our hearts and prayers go out to you.

I was blessed to know Ovik for the better part of his life. We shared many activities such as Honor Band and Math Competitions. There is not one moment that I recall that Ovik wasn't trying to help someone, he set an example for all that knew him and even those who didn't. It is heartbreaking knowing that hes gone especially since the distance has grown over years but know that he won't be easily forgotten.
