Rebecca Sumner Obituary

MOUNDVILLE Rebecca Tidmore Sumner, age 81, passed away April 5, 2011, at Hospice of West Alabama. Memorial services will be 10 a.m. today at Moundville United Methodist Church with Rev. Reba Wiley and Rev. Thomas Terry officiating and Magnolia Chapel South directing. The family will receive friends in the Family Life Center following the service.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Florence and Lee Tidmore; her husband, Leo Sumner; her sister, Sarah Carr; and her brothers, Allen, Gerald, and James Lee Tidmore.

Survivors include her three daughters, Brenda Ryan (William “Sonny”), Debra Campbell (Thurman), and Sarah Duggan (Charley); her grandsons, Patrick Ryan (Ashley) and Brittan Campbell (Sara Jane); her granddaughters, Jenny and Sumner Ryan, Ellen Campbell, and Julia Jane and Maggie Duggan; her great-grandsons, Sage and Griffin Campbell; and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

Mrs. Sumner worked in many educational settings, including Hale County High School, the University of Alabama, and Shelton State Community College. While living in Moundville, she served as Secretary and Sunday School teacher at the Moundville Baptist Church and cheerleader sponsor at Hale County High School. In addition, she held many leadership positions with the Moundville Quest Club and was recently honored as a charter member. While her daughters were young, she was a Girl Scout leader and an active PTA member. After retiring, she enjoyed volunteering at Druid City Hospital, gardening, cooking, and entertaining. She is probably best known for her caramel cakes and famous barbecue sauce. For the last two years, she has lived at Capstone Village where she enjoyed dining and talking with many friends. Known as “Miss Becky” to many, she was a true Southern lady. She loved her family, her home, and all things beautiful.

The family would like to thank the staff at Capstone Village and Hospice of West Alabama, all her many dedicated sitters, and special friend, Betty Hurt.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Leo Sumner Scholarship Fund at Hale County High School, to the Moundville United Methodist Church, or to Hospice of West Alabama.

Please know that our prayers and thoughts are with all of you. Jim (Selwyn) and I quite often reminisce about our high school days and your Mom and Dad are ususally the first ones we think of and a smile comes across our faces. I know you are sad at this moment but I also know that in the days to come you will find that at any given moment a special smile will come forth. God's Blessing to you.
