Albert Baker Obituary

Baker, Albert E. January 1, 1938 - June 4, 2006 Of Eagan "Death is not extinguishing the light, it is putting out the lamp because dawn has come." Tagore. Happiness is a journey not a destination; it was Al's mission to make sure that the journey was meaningful & enjoyable for everyone. Al was a husband, a father, a grandfather & a friend to all of us that knew him. On Sunday, June 4, 2006 Al lost his battle with cancer at home surrounded by family & friends. If you could measure ones' wealth by the number of friends one has, Al would have been an extremely wealthy man. Al was very active in community functions that served Bloomington, Burnsville & Eagan. He took great pride in volunteering time, space or money for supporting youth activities in these communities. Al was best known for his success as a restaurateur. Al started out in the restaurant business as a general manager for his father-in-law, at Howard Wong's in Bloomington, where he refined his skills under the watchful eyes of Howard and Beulah Wong. In 1981 Al decided to branch off on his own & opened the doors of the Ground Round in Burnsville. The opportunity came in 1985 to purchase some land & a building at the intersection of 35E & Yankee Doodle Road, & Al Baker's was started. Al was preceded in death by his father, Jay C. Baker & is survived by his loving & caring wife of 44 years Donna; mother, Beatrice; children, Bonnie Smith, Jean (John) McLaughlin, Christopher Baker & Kimberly (Patrick) Ahern; & grandchildren, Jacob, Justin, Taylor, Alexandra, Madelyn, Holden, Beatrice & Joseph. Come celebrate Al's life & share your special memories at a gathering of friends Friday 4-8PM at J.S. KLECATSKY & SONS FUNERAL HOME, 1580 Century Pt. (Yankee Doodle Rd. @ Coachman Rd.) Eagan. Memorial Mass 11 AM Saturday at CHURCH OF ST. JOHN NEUMANN, 4030 Pilot Knob Rd. @ Deerwood Dr., Eagan. Gathering also Saturday 9:30-11AM at the church. Private inurnment Resurrection Cemetery. The Baker family would like to thank hospice for their loving care & patience during Al's time at home. In lieu of flowers, memorials to a hospice of your choice or donors wish.

Donna and family: I only learned of Al's passing today in the Star Tribune south section. Although I did not know Al well, I remember seeing him often at Al Baker's, where he would always take time to greet customers regardless of how busy it was. At the Enjoy grand opening, Al spoke to me at length about his restaurant background and experience. He was obviously both a well-liked and well-respected man. It is a terrible shame that he is gone too soon. May his memory be a blessing and a source of strength to your family.

Donna & family, I am so sorry. I pray that you are comforted by your faith in Christ in knowing that you will again be together, never to be separated.

Al hired me into my first job as a busboy at the Burnsville Ground Round back in 1983.

Countless happy memories of those times are vivid to this day. I remember in particular one day he had just picked up his lunch from the kitchen and sat down in the bar to enjoy it. As was typical, he stepped away to speak with a guest and I cleared the table, not knowing it was his unfinished lunch. I remember him coming to find me in the kitchen with a sly grin on his face asking where his lunch went and I had to profusely apologize after thinking I was right on top of things. He gave me a pat on the shoulder and said try not to do such a quick job next time!

Although it's been many years since I last saw and talked with him, my heart is heavy as I feel I've lost a real and genuine friend. Please take comfort in knowing he made a lasting difference to me in my life.

Dearest Donna, Jean, Chris and Kim,

What a Guy! Al had such an amazing spirit about him. His genuine soul, caring heart, and witty sense of humor are just a few of his many outstanding characteristics. Al always had a smile on his face and words of encouragement for me, in many ways I looked at Al like a Dad. Having lost my Dad in January to cancer, I can truely feel your loss and pain as well. I will lift each of you up in prayer over the coming hours, days and months ahead. My most sincere and heartfelt sympathies. May you find comfort in knowing he is experiencing an exquisite journey like no other and that he is safe in the arms of Jesus. Gods Blessings and peace to each of you.
