I attended middle school at Minnehaha Academy between 1980 and 1982 and was Alex's classmate. I was also a student in Herr Kaul's 8th grade German class. I did not know Alex that well, but his humor, ebullience, athleticism, and lust for life made a profound impression on me. It does to this day, over 30 years later. My deepest sympathies go out to Herr and Mrs. Kauls, to Alex's wife and children, and to the entire Kauls family.

Wanted to share my fondest memory of my cousin! We were up at the cabin fishing and Alex reeled in a fish and swung it up. The fish landed in my hair, hook and all. My dad comes running to save his screaming daughter. Yep he fell in the lake. All of us cousins were laughing so hard, Dad not so much! Peace Alex I cherish that memory. Wishing Herr Kauls, Ann and Greg peace in this challenging time. Alex was a soccer legend at Minnehaha, and I was fortunate to be his teammate at North Park in Chicago for 2 years. He was an unselfish leader and I loved playing with him. He was a talented and great man and he is remembered fondly by so many people that he impacted.

I remember the summer after my freshman year of college when I returned home to Minnesota and helped Alex with a soccer camp at the MA South Campus. I quit my summer job doing grocery stock early so I could spend time with him and get "paid" with lunch at the end of the week. I had just started dating a woman (who is now my wife) and Alex was telling me all about marriage and fatherhood. His words of wisdom stick with me still as a husband of 10 years and father of a two year old. And that week of playing soccer tennis after camp ended for the day helped to rekindle my love for the beautiful game. Herr Kauls and Ann, thank you for your son and his infectious love for life. Greg, thank you for coaching me along the way with your brother. Elena, Natalie, Gabriella, and Amanda, your husband and father was an amazing man of faith and life. The memory of his presence will linger for a long, long time. God's peace be with you in these hard times.

I am so very sorry to hear this. I have played soccer for more than 30 years in the Europe and the USA, and Alex was the finest team leader with whom it was ever my privilege to play. His passion and his fury not only inspired his teammates and made them better, he always made us believe we would win.
If there is a Valhalla for soccer players, I have no doubt that Alex will be right there in the midfield, taking no prisoners. RIP #10. - TB/1986

I, sadly, have only a brief memory of Alex as a little boy at some Minnehaha event back when I was in HS. If my memory serves me correctly, I remember him as a cutie with blonde wavy hair. It looks like he grew to be a handsome man with a warm smile and still the wavy hair! I trust you are blest to carry many wonderful memories of times with him in your hearts. I had the privilege of playing for Alex his first year as the head coach of MA's Varsity team. We won the Tri-Metro and lost to the eventual state champs in the section championships. I've never had more fun playing soccer. He will be missed.

Herr Kauls, After an absence of eight years, I moved back to Minneapolis last week, and resumed reading the obituaries. I was shocked to read of Alex's passing in today's paper. Please accept my heartfelt sympathy at your family's profound loss. If I remember correctly, he was an infant in arms back in 1968 when I traveled to Germany with you and Ann, and members of our Minnehaha Academy German classes. May memories of Alex comfort you in the difficult days, months and years ahead.
