Audrey Heriot Obituary
Heriot - Audrey Born August 31, 1914, passed away on Tuesday, July 16, 2002 at age 88 in Mesa, AZ. Mother to three sons (Jim, George and Angus Heriot). She grew up in St. Paul, MN living with different members of the family, treasuring her growing up years at Bald Eagle Lake with her grandparents, Caroline and Charles. After the death of grandmother at age 15, Audrey relocated to twin cities and attended Central Sr. High School and continued on to college at Macalester. During her travel to Chicago, Audrey met Gordon Ian Heriot. They both moved to New York City and soon were married. It was there that their first son Jim was born. Later the family relocated to New Canan, CT where their sons George and Angus were born. For the 20 years, Audrey's family lived in all the states of New England except Rhode Island. During their residence in Hanover, NH, Gordon and Audrey worked for Dartmouth College for several years. Gordon entered into the Congregational ministry and later became a minister. During the family's numerous relocations, Audrey attended the University of Maine and Brandeis University. Afer many years, her family relocated to Lakeland, MN where Audrey continued her education at the WI State University at River Falls and finally, after 30 years, completed her bachelors with majors in Art and Psychology. After the separation with Gordon, she attended the U of M for her Masters. Audrey taught art at Vardell Hall, NC and Slippery Rock University in PA as assistant Professor and then Professor. She also became Director of Art Exhibits at Slippery Rocer Univ. and a juried, exhibiting member of the Assocation Artists of Pittsburgh and the Pittsburgh Weaver's guild. IN 1976 she resigned because of arthritis and moved to AZ for the sunny and dry climate. From 1977-1992, she was a juried member of the AZ Designer Craftsmen, exhibiting annually in their juried shows. For 30 years participated in-group and one-person exhibits in MN, NC, PA, TX and AZ. Other memberships that Audrey was involved with were: Civil Liberties Union, Gray Panthers, Gentle Strength Coop, Greenpeace Common Cause, Sierra Club, Public Citizen (Nader's Group), Democratic Party, Church of the Epiphany & Arthritis Association. As a member of the Arthritis Assoc., Audrey was working towards starting a support group for people with Polymyagia Rheumatica. Audrey Heirot was a dynamic person and will be greatly missed by many and her three sons most of all. Her three sons, Dr. James Heriot of Walpole, MS survive Audrey George Heriot of St. Paul, MN, Angus Heriot of Olympia, WA; granddaughter Anita; and grandsons, Morgan and Brian Heriot of Stillwater, MN. Audrey Heriot, mother, educator, social worker and friend to many, will be missed by her family and all that knew her.
