To Brian's family; I will never forget our 4 day solo canoe trip from our Boy Scout base camp in the Boundary Waters National Park. All was good until we got to Lake Saginaw. Strong north winds, but be made it to an small island. The north wind was unrelenting. We waited another day. Early the next morning we decided to make a run for it. We had to tack 3' to 4' waves in a 17' Grumium canoe to cross a 5 mile section of the lake to the next portage. Brian never wavered as the bow man and kept digging into the waves to maintain our slow steady progress to calm waters.

I knew Brien during our school years in Mahtomedi. We both grew up on the WBL lakefront a few blocks apart. The Brien I knew was full of life. We carpooled to MHS together. He in my `53 Ford and me on the back of his Vespa and later in his Corvair. We sailed and waterskied with each other on our respective boats. One VERY windy day, he called me and wanted to know if I would help on his X-boat to see how far over we could high side without tipping. We had a very exciting afternoon and tipped it over a few times. One winter when we were in high school, we built a snow/ice ramp on WBL. He want to see how much distance he could jump the Corvair. When it landed, the rear axle cracked. Doc and Laurie never heard the real story when they asked how it happened. Our senior year, Brien and I were beyond any math being taught at MHS, so arrangements were made for us to attend a freshman class at Hamline College. I´m especially sad to learn that my partner in "wild" is no more.

I just received the news from my daughter Courtney and I am very shocked and saddened by the news. I have so many fond and sometimes crazy memories of all the things we did together-- softball, racquetball, golf and the jackalopes in some crazy bar in Duluth.
