Craig SEYFORTH Obituary

Age 94, of Maplewood, MN Passed away on March 24, 2021, with his loving wife by his side. A graveside service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, March 29 at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, MN. Harlan Craig Seyforth was born in Red Wing, MN on May 4, 1926, the son of Harlan G. Seyforth and Louise (Truempler) Seyforth. He grew up in Ellsworth, WI, graduating from High School there in 1945. With the U.S. embroiled in World War II, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in March of his senior year and reported for duty three days after graduation. Trained as an electrician at the Farragut Naval Training Station in Farragut, ID, he was then sent to Noumea, New Caledonia, headquarters of the United States military in the Pacific. There he was assigned to serve as an electrician on a 103 foot U.S.N. cargo ship that moved behind the front lines carrying groceries, frozen food, and medicine to bases in the South Pacific, one of a crew of 30. Initially stationed at Noumea, New Caledonia, the crew was later stationed out of Pago Pago, Samoa. They were part of the immense logistical supply chain which provided millions of American service people everything they needed to serve and fight thousands of miles from shore. After the war, he went to college on the G.I. Bill, enrolling at UW River Falls for two years, before transferring to UW-Madison where he graduated in 1950 with his bachelor's degree from the School of Business. While on campus he interviewed for a job as an Insurance Adjuster with Western Adjustment & Inspection Co. in Terre Haute, IN. He was offered a position with them performing fire, wind, and auto adjustment and started in July 1950. He was transferred to their Bloomington, IL office in 1952. It was in Bloomington that he met a kindergarten teacher, Mary Uhrie, in the Spring of 1955 on a double date. They would marry there a year later on April 26, 1956. In October 1968 he changed employers and began work at State Farm Insurance Co. continuing in Fire Claims Adjusting. Assigned to their North Central Regional Office in St. Paul, they moved there in November 1968. They eventually built a house in Maplewood, MN where they lived from 1969-2019. He retired from State Farm in 1989. Active members of North Presbyterian Church in North St. Paul, they volunteered on various church committees and participated in church social groups. He loved to travel and enjoyed camping, fishing, and the outdoors. They enjoyed monthly activities over the last four decades with an informal group of friends "The A-Z Club" named because the last names of members ranged from A-Z. His final years were spent at the senior living community, Sunrise of Roseville, in Roseville, Minnesota. Craig is survived by his wife, Mary; his children, Scott of Madison, WI, Katie (Hammer) of Frederic, WI, Ann (Rausch) of Shoreview, MN; grandchildren, Christine, John and Henry; and sister, Joy Lohuis of Salinas, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents, H. G. and Louise Seyforth. 651-777-2600 sandbergfuneralhome.com
